Mandatory Vaccination
Should the government make vaccination mandatory for everyone?
This study will explore the issue of mandatory vaccination across the following aspects, namely the ethical, public health, and cultural-political aspects.
Public health aspect
This aspect considers the impact of mandatory vaccination on public health. The vaccines are purposely for the prevention of the emergence and spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. An essential element in preventing diseases is to achieve a more significant portion of the population vaccinated. This aspect considers mainly the benefits that the public will get from having a larger population vaccinated in mandatory vaccines (Vaz et al., 2020). This is debated in contrast to failing to implement compulsory vaccination and risking public health, with fewer persons willing or volunteering for immunization.
Ethical aspect- autonomy
The ethical aspect considers the question of the autonomy of care. One of the core healthcare values is respect for independence, such that each individual is responsible for their maintenance (Galanakis et al., 2013). As a result, one has the right to choose the health products to take and those not to. In other words, health caregivers should not force people to take up a medical effect or procedure that they do not want or are not willing to take up. On the other hand, the medical officers know what is suitable for the population, even more than the population understands.
Cultural-political aspect
Lastly, this study will explore the cultural-political aspect. This is a position that considers people’s values and beliefs, which they hold differently concerning vaccines. People are entitled to different opinions. Some people feel that vaccines are unsafe and they introduce disease into the human body. Others think that there are vaccine side effects, which they are not willing to face. Those taking vaccines feel that those not taking the vaccine are a risk to those who have taken the vaccine. The government thinks that healthcare workers should be the first to take mandatory vaccination because they contact patients (Maltezou et al., 2019). The issue of vaccines has become political in many ways.
