My future goal is to become a cardiovascular technologist. My choice in my future career mainly works with x-rays, ultrasound, and ECG. However, a cardiologist may perform a procedure called Pericardiocentesis. Pericardiocentesis is a procedure where a fluid sample is taken from the sac around the heart to test for potential bacterial infection. Pericardial Fluid Gram Stain is the method used to test the fluid taken from the Pericardium Sac. (Pericardial fluid GRAM STAIN: Medlineplus medical encyclopedia) The Staining method is the most used method for its rapid results.

A sample of the pericardial fluid is place on a microscope slide and a series of special stains are applied to the sample, this is called a Gram Stain. (Pericardial fluid GRAM STAIN: Medlineplus medical encyclopedia) The Gram Stain is then reviewed for the present of a bacterial infection. The color size and shape of the cells help determine what bacteria is present if any. (Pericardial fluid GRAM STAIN: Medlineplus medical encyclopedia)

Microscopes are often used to diagnose an illness such as infections. In the future as a nurse, I may need to use a microscope for a laboratory diagnosis of a vaginal infection. Unfortunately, vaginal infections are quite common. Often different types of infections can present the same physical symptoms; therefore it is necessary to collect a sample and view it under the microscope to determine was the pathogen is.

A healthy vagina sample contains healthy microbiota so it may be necessary to use the Gram stain technique to distinguish the different types of microbes. If I were to see an excess of a gram-positive microbe when using a compound light microscope and a Gram stain, then it would confirm a diagnosis of candidiasis. Candida infections are the second most common. Candida albicans is a yeast that is naturally found in the vagina but can become overabundant when there has been a change in the natural pH balance (Microscopy for Public Health Nurses, 2007).

Figure 1 is an image of Gram-positive Candida albicans (Candida Albicans, 2016).

Figure 2 shows the pseudohypae of Candida albicans – which is also Gram-positive (Candida Albicans, 2016).

STUDENT POST EXAMPLE

My desired career path is nursing, there are many uses for microscopes within healthcare. Light microscopes are typically used with phase-contrast microscopy in order to allow bacteria and blood cells to come to light. These cells are then examined in order to tell when something is going wrong in the patient’s body. This is really important since, without microscopes, many diseases, especially cellular diseases cannot be identified. The information gained from the use of the microscope is then used to develop strategies to treat the patient.

Hi,

Great information. If nurses weren’t able to identify certain diseases and illnesses under a microscope then it would not be evidence based. It would be a guess. Thanks to the microscope healthcare has advanced in specialized knowledge. This in turn helps scientist and medical staff to identify the proper treatment if not come up with a medicine or cure!

Hello,

I agree that use for microscopes in the nursing field is never ending.

There are so many microorganisms that need to be identified, and without our useful tools we would not be where we are today. Of course many of these microorganisms cannot all be identified with just one microscope, as you mentioned in your discussion there are multiple, such as the light and phase-contrast microscopes.
