Research Proposal; Parental Methods of Child Discipline

ABSTRACT

This proposal seeks to explore the consequences of parental methods of child discipline and more precisely, their ability to be effective in maintaining obedience in children. The research for this work will be done at the library with a little bit of exploration on the internet. There are many different types of discipline that parents use to try and teach their children right from wrong; however, it is difficult to determine which works best. Therefore, this project proposes to survey parents’ experiences with different forms of punishment and whether they felt these disciplinary measures were effective or not.

INTRODUCTION.

There are two main types of discipline; positive and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is when the person who punishes receives some sort of benefit, possibly a reward or benefit, for doing so. Negative reinforcement consists of a punishment followed by a reward. This type of discipline is often used as an intervention to gain the attention and cooperation of unruly children. Parental discipline techniques are important for raising responsible children because they are the most effective way to teach them right from wrong and how to lead their lives. Parents must make sure their children understand these concepts for them to become responsible adults.

OBJECTIVES

The long-term goal of the research is to investigate the effectiveness of parenting techniques in teaching children right from wrong and proper behavior. A new concept will be developed to better understand discipline effectiveness as well as the ability to raise responsible, civilized individuals. To accomplish these goals, a survey questionnaire needs to be created and then distributed to parents. There will also be some brief exploration on the internet to gather information that may be useful later on.

A PRELIMINARY LITERATURE REVIEW.

Parenting techniques have many uses. For example, some feel that spanking is a good way to discipline their children; while others see it as abuse. Parental discipline is important in gaining a child’s attention and cooperation. It is also necessary for children to understand the difference between right and wrong and how to act appropriately in society. However, there are many different ways of disciplining children; therefore, some parents find it difficult to determine which methods will be effective.

Children need to be taught respect for themselves and others; this will then lead them into being more efficient members of society.

METHODOLOGY.

The primary method for this research will be a survey. A survey will be created that includes five questions which will be collected by the researcher from parents. The questionnaire must be based on a true story to avoid bias. Then, this information must be collected and used to conclude the effectiveness of various parenting techniques.

A secondary method of research may include a brief exploration of the internet to gather more information about the effectiveness of parenting techniques. This information may be included in the survey forms to make sure that it is accurate. A survey will also need to be created about the various parenting techniques that have been used by any parents who may feel the same way about this subject.

Data collection will begin with researching and reading books from the library, which are important resources. Also, a brief period of internet exploration may be used as well; this will be to gain some more information for later use in the survey questionnaire. After this has been completed, a preliminary questionnaire will need to be created and then distributed so that parents can fill out their experiences on discipline methods with their children. This research should take four months to complete due to its size and scope.
