TEACHERS QUESTION:
Describe the role of organizational development in contemporary organizations. How does organizational development help organizations prepare for or implement change? Provide an example from your organization.
STUDENTS RESPONSE:
The Association for Talent Development (n.d.) states that organizational development (OD) is “an effort that focuses on improving an organization’s capability through the alignment of strategy, structure, people, rewards, metrics, and management processes.” This can prepare an organization for possible product and service improvement, employee development, better and increased communication, ongoing improvement, and increased profit.
OD has five phases which are entry, diagnosis, feedback, solution, and evaluation. These stages will be used to design and implement organizational development strategies. For example, high patient satisfaction has been a goal of hospitals. Identifying and exploring this issue is the entry phase. Diagnosis is the essentially the process of data collection. In this phase, concepts like patient satisfaction surveys are used. Understanding the information collected is the feedback stage that can be used to outline the change solution. Solution is the process of improving/correcting the problem. This is when you see training or education surrounding the change in the hospital. Finally, data would be collected again to see if initiatives are being met.
