Abstract
This study examines the issue of co-occurring disorders among individuals suffering from substance abuse. According to past research, there is a high correlation between substance use and mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Therefore, this study will examine the prevalence of co-occurring disorders among the youthful population. Besides, the research will assess the use and benefits of dual diagnosis in treating co-occurring disorders. The study is founded on the Gateway Foundation, a human services organization based in Chicago, Illinois (Gateway Foundation, 2021). Moreover, the research draws on the organization’s co-occurring and dual diagnosis services.
The proposed solutions include hiring and training more service personnel and specialists to help the agency handle the expected high number of clients. This approach will be necessary to ensure the availability of competent employees (Gateway Foundation, 2021). Additionally, the action research proposed individualized treatment for patients with co-occurring disorders. The method is appropriate to allow follow-up and prevent relapse of the patients. Moreover, the proposed solutions to the action research include improving community awareness and education programs (Stringer & Aragón, 2020). Such an initiative will effectively inform the community about the prevalence of co-occurring disorders to encourage them about dual diagnosis.
This study has used action research to assess the issue by focusing on the planning stage to outline the objectives and priorities of the program. This phase involved studying the presenting problem and the appropriate research methods (Stringer & Aragón, 2020). Furthermore, the study has applied action research to identify the study sample and develop the research instruments. This step is vital as it enables the data collection from the identified sample. Moreover, action research involves data analysis to determine the trends and patterns in the data. The data findings helped identify the issues for the proposed solutions and recommendations to address co-occurring disorders in the community.
