Personal–Professional Narrative

Human resource management is a growing career field in the modern business landscape, with staff positions at every Fortune 500 company and even trickling down to smaller firms. With such a wide array of customers, employability is easy; a person could work virtually anywhere. Given recent events, the workforce is searching for stability and a career that allows work accomplished remotely if necessary. In this narrative, the author will discuss his path to a business management degree and how the necessary leadership, organizational skills, and work ethic are required to excel in the field.

As an adolescent, several people struggle with finding their path in life. Many people find themselves joining the workforce out of necessity rather than chasing their dream careers. Several events transpired that culminated with a path towards a Bachelor of Applied Science in Business Management. After high school, the author had few options, and they decided to join the military. Several deployments and fifteen years later, a crossroads have appeared, and the option to finally pursue a degree has presented itself. This degree path allows for a broad scope of careers, a more practical choice involving more rational thinking than whimsey. Practical choices do not always mean passionless careers. Positions in human resource management are leadership roles within the organization, charging the team with the welfare of the staff. Just as the military takes care of troops, human resource managers care for staff.

Having a sturdy background in leadership is a strong character trait that will pay dividends in both the daily duties and hiring process in this field. Today’s veterans spend many years mentoring subordinate service members, and many of those skills are transferrable into human resource management. An organization’s culture is the product of the group of people working there; understanding group dynamics is a core skill of developing a culture that is both inclusive and high performing. Cultivating relationships and building trust amongst the team is a way the company’s leadership can bring the office together toward a common goal. In the team hierarchy, it is important for human resource professionals to understand social cues and drive any situations that may develop towards resolution.

Something that changed the world’s perception for our author was joining the military and going to war. Contrary to popular belief, most service members do not see any fighting on the front lines; this is not the case in our scenario. Realizing how small all the first-world problems are in the United States can be extremely humbling. Watching a culture punish children for attending school solely based on gender and confiscating any rights held by mothers is enough to evoke a sense of duty to the innocent in the mind of a soldier. When most think about the toils of war, often mentioned is the camaraderie. The privilege of leadership in the military in a combat unit is a heavy burden but rewarding. Only in that experience can a person receive real-time feedback from subordinates creating a catalyst for success. Given such responsibility at a young age will age a person with the maturity and wisdom of a much older being.

There are several traits a person possesses to be a strong candidate leading a human resources team. A strong work ethic is a necessary skill in any career field, which continues to hold in any capacity of the human resources team. The ability to commit time and effort towards the welfare and morale of different functioning groups inside the workplace is a task that remains paramount. Understanding the common goal of the company and ensuring everyone is in a place where all shoulder the commitment to excellence will ultimately be delegated to the human resources manager. Cultivating a culture that fosters inclusivity and welcomes diversity will allow all voices to be heard, ensuring no stone is left unturned when developing solutions through critical thinking.

When actively working to provide for oneself, there will always be obstacles when pursuing higher education. Instead, focusing the attention on the difficulty that many veterans find in transition from military service to civilian employment will be more productive. While many veterans possess the skills necessary to be great, inspirational leaders, some find it hard to tailor the way they speak and write in a way their new audience can understand. Often veterans tend to apply to military-friendly companies, businesses on military installations, and careers below their qualifications due to their inability to adapt. By committing to a mindset for change and developing a transition timeline, the possibility exists to seamlessly flow into the civilian workforce. Several programs offer veterans the ability to create that timeline between the military and the company of interest. There are few challenges that can defeat a positive attitude and will to succeed. Throughout the hardships of the military, our author has experienced that having a positive mental outlook has often made the difference between desirable and negative outcomes.

In conclusion, the author discussed the path he took to arrive at a business management degree and the skill sets necessary to achieve success in a human resource management career. The manager sets a positive example as a leader for the team through attention to detail, a commitment to excellence, and a strong work ethic. The manager can increase productivity while limiting task saturation by developing an environment that fosters inclusivity and economy of effort towards a common goal. Experience in the military may build the foundation of skills, but a positive attitude and plan for transition will set up the author for success in his desired career field.
