22 stand up representing poverty, 7 sit down

Problem Argument

Despite people being aware of the situation the number of people living below the poverty threshold is increasing not decreasing

Visual Aid- On power point

Use the quote “It’s a fundamental paradox: in America, the wealthiest country on earth, one also finds the highest rates of poverty in the developed world” (Rank, 2011).

Been an issue since 1964 when President Lyndon Johnson created “The War on Poverty” (Desilver, 2014).

Targeting Ethos and Logos and fear appeal

Have audience raise their hand if they personally know someone affected by poverty, or have seen a homeless person on the streets begging

This shows people are aware of the situation of poverty yet the number still increases

Targeting Pathos

Poverty is a vicious cycle (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2015) (Duncan, 2012)

Barriers

Time Constraint

Substitute for the time spend on social media, Netflix, video games, napping, etc.

Statistics that show happiness from giving to others which will help them perform better in school, extra curricular, and at job because of positive attitudes

Targets the guilt appeal and reward appeal

Negative Mindset

They want help if they came to United Way

They get caught in the vicious cycle

The have educations and jobs just not enough income

Show statistics and give real life example (Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2015)

Target the Interrupt then reframe method, Pathos

Conclusion

Donating just an hour of your week can help multiple people
