Basically, the idea behind a close reading is to focus on one small part of text
(i.e. a few lines of a poem or a paragraph of a story or essay) and to examine it in great
detail. Once you pick out the most important elements of your passage and why they are
there, you will work to fit in the part of the text you chose into the text as a whole. Your
argument (thesis) for the paper should identify the stanza and explain why you chose it.
