Facts vs “fake news.”

One of the pressing issues in our democracy today is the illiteracy of the public when it comes to facts vs “fake news.” The goal of this assignment is for you to use a sociological viewpoint on how the media reports violence.

Find a news article from a reputable news source that discusses violence in American society in an article.

The article you choose needs to go into some detail concerning the nature of the violence and offer some explanation(s) for why the individual(s) involved is/are believed to have committed the violence.

The Article: https://www.usnews.com/news/cities/articles/2020-08-06/4-theories-about-why-homicides-are-spiking-in-us-cities
Your assignment should (organize your paper according to these):

Briefly (1-2 paragraphs) describe the violence and circumstances surrounding it as discussed in the article you chose.
What explanations does the article offer to explain why this particular violence has been committed?
Are the causes attributed to the violence of individual or structural in nature? Make sure you show me that you understand the difference between these two types of explanations.
Do you feel that the explanations for the violence in the article are adequate? Why or why not? (Note e.g. if institutional or structural factors are omitted in the article that could be useful in understanding the violence better.)
Based on your analysis of the violence depicted in the article, what specific social policies might be developed to reduce this type of violence?
