Assignment 2: Online information resource (2000 words) – 60% Due This module focuses on contemporary issues in criminology, social control, and the criminal justice system. The broader theme will be to illustrate the role of the state in crime and social control through, for example, the interface between social policy and crime control, the evolution of governmental form and criminalisation, and the rise of diverse forms and means of governance and their consequences on processes of criminalisation. For this assignment you will write a 2000-word online information resource on ONE of the following questions: In what way has the British penal system evolved in its treatment of the prisoner?Critically assess how the concept of ‘edgework’ helps us understand why some people commit crime? In what way can we explain forms of protest as responses to forms of social control and governmentality?Thinking of a case study, can we make sense of the forms of policing of protest using any of the theories in this module? E.g., Foucault’s theory governmentality/ risk management and actuarial justice The online information resource should contain text (2000 words), images, and references but may also include music and video. The final product will take the form of a website and so students will learn web publishing skills and develop critical thinking, research and referencing skills. More detailed guidance on how to create the online information resource will be given in-class during the term. As was the case for your Report, the target audience of your online information resource is a member of the general public who is interested in its topic. Your aim is to give them an academic understanding of it. Write the online information resource in the way you would a normal essay. This means it needs to be academically rigorous, with academic referencing. It also means it should follow the same structure as an essay, with an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. The reason we have asked you to write an online information resource for a member of the general public, is to emphasize that good academic writing assumes the reader has no prior knowledge of the topic, and therefore tries to explain things to them in as clear a way as possible.
