**I’ve attached the assessment requirement and 3 example case studies. Because the example case study were done last year and i don’t have the assessment requirement for last year. The example case studies are for reference only, to get to know what the structure of the essay looks like. There might be difference from this years requirement compare to last year’s.**
Company/Organisation: Instagram OR Facebook
Your case study should include discussion of the following:
• What was the context in which design thinking was applied? How familiar was the organisation with design approaches before starting the project?
• How and why was this approach chosen? What were the expectations?
• What activities took place and how were things organised? What happened along the way?
What frameworks were used to shape the activity?
• What resources (skills, knowledge, methods, financial resources) were involved?
• Who was involved, when, how and why?
• What were the outcomes of using this approach and for whom? What were the benefits of using a design thinking approach?
• What were the challenges and how were they overcome (or not)?
• Did the organisation invest further in developing a design capability?
1. The case study should demonstrate a clear understanding of the organisation(s) involved and the relevant context. The report should include a Business Model Canvas for the organisation (which can be included in the Appendices). If the organization is not a business firm, please adapt the framework to the particular type of organization (in doubt, please contact the instructors).
A good answer will demonstrate a clear understanding of each element of the organization, and be supported by appropriate quantitative and qualitative information. The analysis of the organisation should identify the key challenges that the organisation faces. A very good answer will include information from multiple sources and demonstrate clear connections between the information included and the logic and analysis of the report. An excellent answer will also analyse the organisation’s external environment (eg. PESTLE analysis). An outstanding report will reveal non-obvious connections, surface latent challenges or undetected opportunities, and more generally demonstrate uncommon insight into the organization and the context.
2. The case study should demonstrate a clear understanding of the specific challenge(s)/problem(s) faced by the organisation that were the focus of applying design thinking.
A good answer will identify the factors shaping this problem and describe the activities through which this challenge became visible and significant from the point of view of decision makers in the organisation. A very good answer will include information from multiple sources and identify different stakeholders and actors for whom the problem came to be significant. An excellent answer will also further explore the circumstances leading to this problem and its importance to stakeholders and actors. An outstanding answer will display superior insight in the challenges that the actors involved themselves displayed, and/or (if relevant) a persuasive diagnosis of the limited capacity of decision makers to properly frame and address the problem.
3. The case study should describe the approach (tools, frameworks, overall design, etc.) selected and the reasons for using this approach.
A good answer will outline the approach and describe the activities, methods, outputs and people involved using publicly available materials including academic research but also blogs, social media and reports. A very good answer will use several sources of information to describe the approach and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of the choices made. An excellent answer will show depth in the above mentioned – a range of activities, methods, people involved and outputs from each phase accompanied with rich examples/evidence. An outstanding answer will also include original material, such as interviews with the actors involved, and/or offer a focused, detailed, and realistic discussion of alternative approaches and their comparative benefits.
4. The case study should describe the outcomes that resulted from taking this approach. A good answer will use examples to show how the approach taken resulted in particular
outcomes, how these were assessed or evaluated, and will discuss the challenges of carrying 4
out the design project. A very good answer will explicitly connect the description of outcomes to value creation (see, for instance, the ideas espoused in the McKinsey and Frog Design reports) An excellent answer will use multiple sources of information to consider the effects of the project on different actors and stakeholders. An outstanding answer will apply multiple, non-obvious evaluation criteria (in addition to those used in the project itself), and reflect, based on evidence or cogent reasoning, on the potential long-term effects of the project.
5. The report should demonstrate independent critically argued opinions. The structure you use for the report should reflect both the intended audience and the purpose of the report. All sources used should be identified and included in a bibliography (included as an Appendix) together with footnote-based references.
A good report will be clearly presented (structure, logic, formatting) and communicate to the intended audience in an appropriate way (clear, easy to follow, and visually appealing). A very good report will also include multiple sources to support each conclusion and will not base its conclusions directly on one source. An excellent report will also demonstrate critical judgement on the choice of sources and the ability to draw conclusions based on incomplete and/or contradictory information. An outstanding report will be characterised by the utmost rigor of argumentation and professional quality of execution.
