Today’s reading continues the fictional conversation from last time, now between C. S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley who represents the Eastern pantheistic perspective.
Discussion:
I. First, answer the following questions (both a. and b.)
1. As Lewis and Huxley begin their discussion, Huxley raises his first objection: Jesus never claimed divinity; the Christian texts cannot be trusted. Lewis then launches into a defense of the trustworthiness of the biblical texts. What are his arguments?
2. On page 82, Huxley raises his second objection: Jesus was divine, but only in the sense that we are all divine; Jesus was a pantheistic, mystic-teacher to the Jews, but the Jews misunderstood what he was saying. Lewis resolutely counters that Jesus was not a pantheistic guru. What reasons does he give to show this?
II. Second, explain whether you found Lewis’ argument persuasive or not. Explain your reasons for your answer. In comparison with the argument with Kennedy, did this part feel more or less persuasive to you? Why?
