In the United States, the academic field of political science is divided into six subfields; these are (1) American politics; (2) comparative politics; (3) international relations; (4) political theory; (5) political methodology; and (6) race, ethnicity and politics. In addition, as politics has become more complex, the number of different areas of focus within political science has only increased. According to one recent handbook of political science, The Oxford Handbook of Political Science (2009), internationally, the field of political science consists of ten subfields or distinct areas of academic specialization; these are (1) political theory; (2) political institutions; (3) law and politics; (4) political behavior; (5) contextual political analysis; (6) comparative politics; (7) international relations; (8) political economy; (9) public policy; and (10) political methodology.
