Instructions to candidates:
Time allowed: Original Duration of Exam: 2 Hours. You will have 48 hours (72 hours if you
have a Learning Support Plan in Place) to complete the paper.
Rubric:
You are required to answer THREE questions from the five questions supplied
Each question has a total 20 marks (converted to % later).
Submission:
You are required to submit your exam answers to the relevant Turnitin Submission Point on
Student Central in the Assessment and Grades Area. This should be in the form of a word
document. Please do not include your name on the answer document as papers will be
marked anonymously. You must however include your student number on the work
submitted.
Word Count
1,000 words for each hour of the original duration of your exam. The maximum word count
for this exam is 2,000 words. Please do not exceed the word count as the work will not be
marked. There is a maximum word count of 650 for each question
Handwritten calculations and diagrams:
Please photograph any handwritten calculations or diagrams that form part of your answer,
and embed them into the Word document. You are not expected to use Excel for calculations.

Question 1: This question is about MRP and ERP systems.
a) What are MRP and MRPII?
As well as discussing the functions of these systems, your answer should include
something on the various components that comprise the systems. Evidence of reading
beyond the lecture notes (with references) will be useful.

b) As an evolution of MRP, ERP systems are a powerful tool for enterprise level organisations.
Discuss their purpose, benefits (and otherwise). Your answer should contain examples
(with references) of these applications.

Question 2. This question is about Requirements Analysis.
a) When considering what is to be included in a software project, web site, app, etc., the
systems developers need to know what is required – a Requirements Analysis takes place.
Discuss what this analysis is. You should include explanations and examples of types of
requirements, show how they are gathered, and what the analysis outcomes are for the
developers. Provide a reference to sources where applicable.

b) Provide a MoSCoW analysis for one of the topics below.
Your answer should show at least 4 requirements for each section (2 for the W section),
with brief supplementary notes explaining your reasoning.

Question 3. This question is about Project Planning.
The project manager of Arroyolleno Development is putting together a schedule which contains the
following tasks, and their dependencies. Descriptions are not provided:

a) Using the data from Table 1, draw a network (using activity-on-node notation) and then
calculate, and notate on drawing, the various timings (early/late start/finish).

b) What is the Total Project Time, and the Critical Path?

On seeing the timings and costs, the client informs Arroyolleno that there is a hard deadline of 2
weeks earlier than the stated end time, and requests that you shorten the project to accommodate
this. The manager carries out further negotiations and has reached a point where the project can
be recalculated to provide a shortened version.

c) What is the project’s Total Original Cost, and Shortened Cost per week for each
activity?

Using your initial calculations, and the completed data from Table 2, decide on the activity
that should be shortened, recalculate the timings (see 3d).
Your goals are to shorten the project by 2 weeks, and to provide the best value final Total
Project Cost. (Total Original Cost + additional costs per week).
d) Redraw the network to show the shortened project.
Calculate the timings and state the critical path (or paths).

e) What are the final costs for the project?

Question 4: This question is about Data Analysis.
When planning the structure of a software project the developer will need to decide, in detail, what
data is to be included. Thus the Data Analysis.
a) Explain, with the use of examples, the goals and outcomes of this analysis. You should
include discussion of top/down and bottom/up concepts, and of logical vs. physical data.
Please provide a reference to sources where applicable.

b) Choose one topic from the list below and draw an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) of the
data structure. Note – the notation used for ERDs varies. Do not include the data items in
your drawing.
