Purpose:
To design, develop and publish a web site using recommended design practice. Your project will demonstrate mastery of the web development skills and concepts learned in this course.
• Develop a web based application using xHTML, CSS, and other techniques used.
• Three students per a group.
• Determine project title yourself.
• Each group submits a project report and softcopy of project source code before presentation.
• Each group presents the project on week 6
Your Web Design project will be to build a substantial Web Site application for a real-world domain of your choosing. You will design a web site component, and then you will create an actual web site using XHTML, CSS and other techniques learned in the class. You will populate the web site on your own, write, design and implement all components and create main page that manipulate the web site.
We suggest that you pick an application that you and your team members enjoy working with, since you’ll be stuck with it for the whole semester! It is especially nice if you pick an application where you can populate your web site using real (as opposed to fabricate) data. Possible examples are:
• Organizational Homepage
• Online Bookstore (e.g., Amazon)
• E-Auction (e.g., eBay)
• Online Shopping Mall (e.g., Buy.com)
• Membership Management System
• Library Information System
• Online Technical Support system (e.g., Dell)
• Tutoring Information system
Choose a topic that you would like to build your web site. Then, outline the subtopics, sections and pages you want to include in your site. You have to use Notepad(++) and write all the XHTML code (Use of Web Authoring Software (ex. Front Page…) or helps from others prohibited and will result in getting a zero in the Assignment).
1) In your website, you are expected to include all the following (At least one example of each somewhere in your website):
• Different text formatting techniques (bold, italic, headers…etc) –refer to the book
• Special characters, email link, external link
• Images (As still images and as links, background)
• Frames, meta tag
• Links (to a file, to another website, and to email)
• Lists (ordered and unordered)
• Form (use text area, textbox, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown menu, password field…etc)
• Table – (use colspan, rowspan and other table formatting techniques)
• Image map, external style sheet (CSS)
• Internal Linking
• Meta elements (in all pages)
• DTD elements (in all pages)
• External Style sheet
• Page layout
• Media and Interactivity (video, graph)
Part 1: Design
1. Write a short (maximum 3 pages) description of the Web Site application and what you have done in this project, how did you implement the work. Your description should be brief and relatively informal. If there are any unique or particularly difficult aspects of your proposed website, please point them out. Your description will be graded on suitability and conciseness.
2. Design and draw a diagram for your proposed Web Site (use Word or VISIO for drawing). List all your assumptions. Otherwise, we will grade your design based on the common sense, and you may lose points if ours and yours are different.
1. Try to pick an application that is relatively substantial, but not too enormous. For example, your web site should have one home page and at least six content pages in the range of three levels into it. Note that this is a ballpark figure only!
2. You should certainly include different kinds of elements, list, tags (or even picture, etc.), that you will learn in this semester (in the textbook). Try to demonstrate your understanding.
3. Implementation (describe the technical details of some important parts of your work instead of full copy of source code.)
4. Describe what how have you used your selected components.
