The basic principles of rain screen wall design are now well understood and applied in a variety of wall construction types (e.g. in E.I.F.S. systems, in residential wood frame and brick veneer construction, and in all-masonry or mixed claddings commercial / institutional walls.) Students are required to draw on an A3 (11” x 17”) format sheet, a wall section of the building shown schematically below, at 1/25 scale and three details (parapet, window head, and sill) at 1/5 scale. The wall section should show the floor levels, proper labelling, and use break lines if needed to fit your section to the paper space. A simple outline is attached here which is done at the correct scales and shows the layout that is possible. The details should elaborate the connection details of the different materials and the methods used to control air, water vapour, liquid moisture, thermal bridging, and temperature.
