Thisinitial feasibility study will include only rudimentary system power system studies. In manydisciplines initial feasibility studies are used to select a few projects that may beeconomically viable from many possible projects. For projects that might make economicsense, a detailed design phase follows. These lines will cost hundreds of millions of dollars.A full design study could cost 1% of the project budget or some millions. Your work willhelp to decide if the project should proceed to a detailed design phase.Some hundreds of millions in additional capital investments will be required to buildadditional major transmission paths within South Australia to get the required power toKrongrat and additional lines will be needed within Victoria and potentially into New SouthWales to cater for the additional flows.Extension Tasks for Utility Masters StudentsThe EUE614 students do not take an exam for this unit and the assignments are more heavilyweighted. Additional tasks are included in italics for these students.Design TaskThe design task is to design a transmission path that has the lowest net present value cost forthe transmission task described in the next section. The NPV cost will include theconstruction cost and the present value of the transmission losses over the first 30 years ofoperation.Heyward already operates at 500kV but a new 500kV transmission substation will be locatedat Krongart. This will include two 1,000MVA 500/275kV transformers. A new 1,200MVAdouble circuit 275kV line will be constructed to Tepko.The minimum line design details would include for each line segment between thetransmission substations: Conductor configuration and types, bundling, heights and clearances, span, sag,tensions; Tower configuration and dimensions; SIL level and power angle assessments; Line parameters in phase quantities; Line losses and corona losses; Lightning protection and earth wire details; Insulation recommendations; Radio interference and acoustic noise estimates; Right of Way considerations.The initial feasibility study will assume the corridor is rural and gently undulating. The towerheight will be designed to achieve, on flat ground, the minimum required conductorclearances for the voltage level selected, plus five metres. Assume 20% strain towers and80% suspension towers.Assignment 1 – Transmission and Distribution 2012 Page 3EUE 614 students will use hand calculations and/or a power systems modelling package oftheir own choice to determine: Line parameters in sequence terms; No load charging VARs; Inductive VAR demand at peak loading; Power angle between Krongart and Heywood at peak loading; If additional equipment is likely to be required to maintain the prospective voltages atKrongrat between 0.9 and 1.1 pu assuming:o Three load cases are important, no load and transfers in and out of SouthAustralia of 2000MW;o Unity power factor;o 1.0pu voltages at Heyward. If additional voltage regulation is required at Krongart assume an SVC will be usedat a cost of $100,000 per MVA. Determine the impact on project cost. You mayconsider a line redesign to avoid this requirement.The student edition of PSCAD is available for as a free download and is capable of this task.Transmission Task – Normal ModesFor the purposes of determining the transmission losses and the economic conductor size thetransmission corridor will be loaded at 1,000MW unity power factor.Replacement task for EUE 614 StudentsFor the purposes of determining the transmission losses and economic conductor size thetransmission corridor will be loaded as follows: During the first ten years of the project 200MW for 35% of the time; 600MW for 35%of the time; 1000MW for 30% of the time; During the remainder of the project 500MW for 35% of the time; 1000MW for 35% ofthe time; 2000MW for 30% of the time.Transmission Task – Peak GenerationFor the purposes of determining the suitability of conductor thermal rating the transmissioncorridor will be loaded at 2000MW.Transmission Voltage and SIL LoadingThe allowable Surge Impedance Loading of the lines is restricted with due regard to the linelengths. These lines are of moderate length. Some of the renewable sources are intermittentand this causes voltage fluctuation problems.
