Welcome Hello and allow me, on behalf of UCA and LCCA, to extend a very warm welcome to you and to wish you every success in your chosen course. Our course is designed to give you the knowledge, skills, experience and confidence that will prepare you either for further study or to succeed in your career, in the cut and thrust commercial world of creative industry. We have designed this programme, with our sector and industry practitioners and contributors, to meet the requirements of both industry and art, and of the professionals who are either currently employed in it or who seek to develop advanced capability. The aim of this approach is to design and deliver an accessible programme that reflects sector currency and assists in the drive towards further professionalism and research capabilities. We understand how important it is to you that you have opportunities to come into campus for teaching and learning and also to meet and learn with other students. Safety remains our key priority and with current Government guidelines in mind, we have created a blended learning approach to your studies. You will be provided, through a combination of in-person and online opportunities, with all the classes, guidance and support you need to engage in your learning experience. This document outlines the unit’s main features and provides you with the key information you need during the unit but if you have any queries about the running of this unit please do not hesitate to contact me. Sadie Clayton : Unit Leader [email protected] 2. Introduction to the Unit The global creative industry today requires individuals who have a breadth of skills and knowledge and who are highly creative, good problem-solvers and able to adapt to change and new situations. This unit will introduce you to the principles of research, critical thinking and analysis as the basis for creative development and develop essential problem-solving skills used to generate creative business ideas and informed design solutions. You will have already been introduced to a range of contemporary design practices used to stimulate creativity and innovation within the creative process. You will be introduced to a variety of research methodologies and explorative ways of recording research in a visually stimulating, appropriate and informative way, to inform experimentation and risk-taking throughout the creative process. This unit involves researching, developing and presenting a self-directed creative project. It is an opportunity to make informed choices in your subject focus, research, practical ideas development and final presentation. At the beginning of this unit you will develop a written project proposal and time plan. In this proposal, you will reflect on your progress and achievement on the course, define your project concept, explain your methodology and list your supporting research and references. In your project proposal, you will need to indicate your proposed workshop and research trip engagement so that relevant support can be put in place. Once your proposal is complete you will undertake relevant contextual research, develop your ideas and investigate advanced processes and methods. This unit will also include the development of professional skills to enable you to organise and manage your workload to meet deadlines and to work independently and within teams. THEME : ‘ EQUALITY’ Equality is the chosen theme for this module. As a result of the unfortunate George Floyd incident in 2020 there has been many movements/campaigns/marches to seek equality within society. Including, but not limited to, the Black Lives Matter moment and conversations around inclusion/diversity within the education sector and institutions. Your task is to create a report and a final innovative outcome in response to this. How can you drive/show equality within your proposal/practice? This could be a creative business output with research, visuals, a portfolio of boards to support that or a piece of artwork communicating equality within society. Equality can be looked at through a number of lenses including : gender, race, society, humanity, freedom, authority. “Since my release, I have become more convinced than ever that the real makers of history are the ordinary men and women of our country; their participation in every decision about the future is the only guarantee of true democracy and freedom.” (Nelson Mandela – Guardian) 2.1 Aims A1 Enable you to integrate skills and knowledge to initiate, research, develop, evaluate, conclude and present a self-directed creative specialist project. A2 Allow you to fully demonstrate skills in analysis, planning, presentation, time management and evaluation. A3 Allow you to confirm specialism and engage in a creative project that explores relevant contextual and conceptual research, processes and materials. 2.2 Learning Outcomes On satisfactory completion of the unit you will be able to: LO1 Develop a personal project that shows critical and contextual understanding of the area of investigation. LO2 Apply theoretical, contextual and technical knowledge to solve problems and develop individual creative solutions. LO3 Critically reflect, evaluate and review project design, development and outcomes. LO4 Present and evaluate own body of work in a professional manner. 2.3 Learning and teaching activities Lectures Workshops Guided independent study Critiques Tutorials Through such activities you will increase and extend your practice, enabling you to demonstrate through self-directed practice and research your ability to be a reflective, proactive and self-directed learner. This will clearly reference your understanding of and the relevance of and to, current and appropriate debates within your chosen field of study. 2.4 Expected study time ActivityHoursScheduled teaching120Guided Independent Study80 Total200 Assessment Type : Report 30% Portfolio 70% 3.
