Rather than test for information you have memorized or have in your head, this assessment asks you about what you have learned over the semester so far, and the ways the course has influenced how you think about art and design from the past. In your responses, for your “three examples” please refer to specific artworks from periods and cultures covered in the second part of the semester (classes 8-13). They do not have to be ones that were shown in class. Please feel free also to refer to objects or monuments discussed in the first half of the semester, but do not use these as any of the “three examples” in your responses.
Respond to 3 of the following essay questions (33 points each) and to question 7 (1 point):
1. Much of the imagery we have looked at is religious, and we talked about new imagery for new religions (for example Christianity or Islam) as well as new imagery for old religions or philosophical systems (for example Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism or Confucianism). Using three examples from different cultures, explain how each image (sculpted, painted, or text) follows the rules of its religion and expresses important aspects of it.
2. We have also looked an many religious spaces, whether constructed or carved. Using three examples from different cultures, explain how the religious spaces express important aspects of the religion.
3. Text is an important aspect of many religions and cultures. Using three examples from different cultures or periods, explain how and why the written word is elaborated and celebrated as an artform or new aspect of design.
4. In certain cultures and periods, artists or patrons are interested in continuing or reviving traditions from the past, but at other times they want something new and break with existing practices. Using examples from three different periods, explain how artists or patrons revived ideas from the past or created a rupture with it.
5. We have looked at objects made in luxurious, expensive materials and others made in simpler, natural materials. Using three examples, show how the materials and style of the objects work together to create a unified effect.
6. Over the course of the semester we have focused on many themes that connect art from the past with ideas that are also relevant to art and design of our own time. Using three pairs of objects or monuments – one old and one modern – explain how your new knowledge of objects from the past has influenced how you view art and design of the present.
** Final Point **
7. ** Extra Credit ** (+1 point): What was the best/most successful part of class this semester?
Grading
This is an “open book” project, so please consult your notes or the textbook. It is not necessary to do any additional research. If you use the internet, ONLY use vetted academic resources that present reliable peer-reviewed information that are the equivalent of an academic book.
If this assessment were held in class, you would only be asked about objects discussed in class and also in the textbook. If you want to, you may refer to objects not discussed in class, but please keep to time periods and cultures we have covered so far; if you choose to use outside objects, make sure to explain your choices with additional clarity, and also include an image (or link to an image).
Also, this is a “big picture” assignment about big themes, through time. Make sure your responses reflect this.
Your responses will be assessed as follows:
Follow all the instructions, including: respond to 3 of the 6 essay questions and to question 7; turn in your assignment on time; include your name in the document itself (not just in the title of the file). Submit your assignment on Canvas. (You can also email it to me; make sure I acknowledge having received it.)
Write a short essay (1-2 paragraphs) for each response. Your responses should be typed, and come to not more than a few pages total (4-5 pages maximum). Write in complete sentences and proofread your work before submitting.
For each object or structure you write about, identify it clearly, and be direct and succinct about what aspects make it relevant to your discussion. (You may also mention related objects or structures in less detail.)
In your discussion, specify similarities and differences between the objects or structures you write about, in terms of formal characteristics, or materials and techniques, or functions and original display contexts. Make sure your discussion is relevant to the question.
Each response will be graded individually:
Do you follow the directions?
Are your responses well organized and clearly written?
Has your text been carefully proofread?
Are your three examples relevant to the questions?
Do you highlight the most important aspects of your examples?
