if you wrote a paper on “prison violence” you should:
* obtain considerable knowledge about the prevalence of violence and its causes in prisons.
* Your articles may summarize American, British and International studies, but some material from Canada is expected.
*Studies from other nations are helpful, as this provides different perspective (or you find out the same problems exist
elsewhere!)
*No use or newspaper and magazines articles
On doing the research:
*The quality of your paper will depend first on mundane but necessary work in the library and on computer data bases. We have a number of good journals in library but through search engines like Google Scholar or ProQuest and the magic of interlibrary loan, you have access to just about any journal you wish. Government reports
can be useful, especially Statistics Canada data, or formal technical reports from organizations such as the federal Solicitor General, Corrections Canada, or Justice Canada.
On integrating the research into your paper
Once you have done your research, you need to write your paper.
* First, you will introduce your topic and explain the purpose of your paper.
* You should identify the issue of interest, and be specific (e.g., mental disability in
prison, violence in prison). Then you need to present your research. You will summarize the ideas and evidence gleaned from your articles, preferably giving me some contrasting view points.
*You will show that you have weighed the evidence critically, and provide with some of your opinions and ideas. While you can do this as you write,
generally it is more effective at the end of a section in your paper, or even in your conclusion. (…Having reviewed the research on sex offender treatment, I would argue that…).
*Your conclusion should also summarize the main points of your paper.
On writing the paper
* should strive for professionalism in their writing. Term papers must be typed on a word processor,
with a proper title page, have page numbers and show that a careful proofreading and spell check were conducted.
*Use proper grammar, sentence and paragraph construction, proper citations and be diligent in preparing the bibliography. People cut and paste APA from different websites and forget that there are different forms of APA, you
should use a consistent format.
***The paper should introduction, review of the research, and a conclusion. I encourage students to use an outline, including sub-headings (e.g., Introduction, Statistical Review, Theories, Policy Interventions). This results in a much better organized paper
**Length of paper- 2500-3000 word
**References: minimum 6 sources, including at least 4 journal articles, three of which must have been published in the last six years.
An 10 -12 page, typed, 12 pt. 1.5 line spaced, 1” margins Term paper is required
