Assignment
You are on a quest to explore the multiple dimensions of the term “identity” — to develop a deeper understanding of what makes you, YOU.
Read/watch the materials assigned for this unit. Consider how each piece adds to your understanding of identity. What is identity? How do we become who we become and know who we are?
Write a reading response in which you explain key ideas about identity found in the assigned materials and discuss your reaction to these ideas. Which ideas did you find most helpful or illuminating? Why? Which ideas did you find less convincing?

Response essays ask you to examine, explain, and often defend your personal reaction to a reading. In this type of essay, you explore why you liked the reading, agreed with the author, found the piece informative or confusing—whatever your response might be. There are no necessarily ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ reactions to material; instead, response essays are usually evaluated on the basis of how well you demonstrate an understanding of the reading and how clearly you explain your reactions. Organization
Introduction
Begin by summarizing the material(s) you will be discussing: specify the author and title of the piece(s) and provide a brief explanation of the author’s content and aim. Then, summarize your overarching reaction to these ideas, preparing the reader for the content that will follow.
Body
In each section of the body of your paper, summarize a key idea presented by the author, then state and explain your reaction. How do you feel about this information based on your own experiences? Why? Personal anecdotes and logical reasoning can help clarify your reaction and deepen your response.
Conclusion
Bring the response essay back to your general reaction to the materials, as stated in your introduction. Try to be succinct and well-spoken, aiming for your last line to pack a punch.
