Milestone 1 is a PowerPoint slide show of no more than 20 slides (not counting cover page or any references/appendices) that will provide a recommendation for the design of the headworks portion of a wastewater treatment plant for Ohio Chicken and Turkey, Inc (OCT).
Using the information provided in the Blackboard folder “Project Files” along with your text book and the weekly PowerPoint Presentations, you will need to determine the following:
Wastewater Collection System:
Specify a design for an open channel that exits the factory building and transports the wastewater stream to the new wastewater treatment plant
The channel must be easily accessible by OCT staff to clean it once a day (this will influence the materials of construction, the shape you choose and the dimensions of the channel)
The channel must be able to hold (without overflowing onto the asphalt) the full flow of wastewater + the volume of stormwater that will drain to the channel from a 25 year, 24 hour storm event
Specify the shape of the channel and explain why you chose that shape
Specify the dimensions of the channel and explain why you selected them
The velocity of the wastewater alone (no stormwater) in the channel must be no less than 1.3 ft/sec and no more than 3.2 ft/sec
Calculate the velocity of wastewater + peak monthly stormwater and list potential issues that might arise from this
Calculate the velocity of wastewater + a 25 year, 24 hour storm event and list potential issues that might arise from this
If you feel there are too many issues with stormwater entering the channel, recommend a solution to mitigate those problems
Estimate costs to install the channel using data provided in the
Specify a type of bar screen to be used to remove the large solids from the wastewater stream
Determine if 1 bar screen or 2 bar screens are necessary and justify your decision
Each bar screen must be able to handle the peak monthly flow (wastewater plus highest peak rainfall day)
Cost of bar screen (one factor provided, regardless of the type of bar screen)
Annual cost of electricity to run bar screen (or screens)
Specify a grinder or comminutor downstream of the bar screens
Any device chosen must be able to handle the peak monthly flow (wastewater plus highest peak rainfall day)
Cost of grinding device
Annual cost of electricity to run grinder
Specify a clarifier for removal of 90% of suspended solids with a settling velocity of 0.0006 cm/sec
Determine the surface area required for the clarifier
Calculate the installation costs of the clarifier
Calculate the annual electricity cost to operate the clarifier
Waste disposal
Determine the mass of waste removed by the bar screens
Specify a disposal method for that waste
Estimate the cost of disposal of the waste
Determine the mass of suspended solids removed by the clarifier
Specify the disposal method for that waste
Estimate the cost of disposal for that waste
