Assessment Task 1: Textual Analysis
Description:
This assignment is a short paper, offering the opportunity to analyse and shed light on the historical significance of a primary source, contrasting it with the other sources which we have studied in Weeks 1 to 5. Students will have to read a specific text, quite similar to the texts studied in tutorials, and perform a close analysis of its context and contents.
The task requires that students formally, but briefly, present the primary source considered (no more than 150 words); then analyse the contents of the primary source, comparing it to other sources studied in class. Finally, in a conclusion, students will stress out the relevance of the source with regards to the topics studied in class.
Assessment criteria:
– Relevance of essay response to the question posed
– Skillfully analyze and interpret primary evidence.
– Use of textual evidence in a textual analysis
– Demonstrate the skills needed to construct an evidence-based argument or narrative in written, form.
– Identify and analyse individual passages and themes relevant to the text’s presentation of the past.
– demonstrate their understanding of the historical contexts of the texts studied, where appropriate
– Formulate and present a well-argued case in that responds directly to their question.
– Support their case with detailed reference to their text(s), given in Chicago referencing style.
– Present their answer an essay-style format, using well-formed paragraphs and clear and correct sentences
