LGBTQ discrimination under the guise of ‘religious freedom’
Purpose of this assignment:
In this paper, you will consider a problem related to sexuality and communication. This specific problem will serve as your topic. You will find 7-10 scholarly sources that more fully explain this problem. These sources must be scholarly journal articles, books, or chapters from scholarly books. Citing your sources, you will explain the problem clearly, demonstrate its urgency, and advance potential solutions for the problem. This will allow you to demonstrate research skills, critical thinking skills, and will show me that you are able to clearly apply theories to everyday life.
You can complete this paper individually or as a small group (3 people or less).
Examples of possible topics:
- Gentrification and its relationship to sexual identity
- Sex tourism / colonialism and sexuality
- Human trafficking
- Homonormativity in San Francisco
- Denial of the legitimacy of bisexuality
- HIV / AIDS
- Rape on college campuses
- Sexual harassment in the entertainment industry
- Sexual assault in the military
- LGBTQ discrimination under the guise of ‘religious freedom’
- Religious discourses and sexuality
- The problems with assimilationist approaches to activism
- The stigmatization of sex work
Requirements:
- Your paper must be in APA style, must be between 6 and 12 pages (not including references), and must be typed in 12-point Times New Roman (double-spaced).
- You must choose one specific problem that relates to sexuality and communication. Your topic must be sufficiently narrow so your writing can be focused, but also must be broad enough to allow sufficient elaboration.
- You must utilize between 7 and 10 recent (ideally within the last 5 years) scholarly sources that discuss your topic. These sources need to be from scholarly journals or academic books. They cannot be dissertations or theses. You may cite the course readings as sources, but I will ask that at least six of your sources come from outside the class.
- You must have an introduction that grabs your reader’s attention, clearly states your thesis statement, and previews your main points. This should be a relatively short paragraph.
- You then must have a rationale section that explains why you think it is important to study your concept in greater detail. Why did you choose this topic? How is it relevant to larger academic discussion and/or everyday life? Your rationale section should be a relatively short paragraph.
- In the body of your paper, you will explain your topic in extreme detail. You should proceed in this order:
- You must clearly explain the problem. To do this, you must consult relevant scholarly literature.
- You must explain the urgency of the problem. Why is this an important problem worth solving immediately? There are so many concerning things occurring in the world right now. Why should we focus on this issue? You must also cite sources here.
- What is a potential solution or what are potential solutions to this problem? Is your chosen solution practical? Does it effectively solve the problem? How so? Does it cause more problems that it solves? Is your solution likely to cost money? Consult sources here as well.
Throughout the body section of your essay, you need to make sure to be synthesizing your sources and not merely summarizing them. Find coherent themes that exist between your sources and organize their inclusion that way. The body section will consist of the bulk of the paper and should be around 4-5 pages.
- You must have a conclusion that summarizes your main points, restates your thesis, and ends strongly. Your conclusion should be a relatively short paragraph.
Evaluation information:
This assignment is worth 100 points. Put a lot of work into this! Show me that you have thoroughly and thoughtfully completed these requirements.
Average work will receive a mid-C grade (roughly 75%). To earn higher than this, make sure that all of the above requirements are not only present, but are done exceptionally well. Make sure to spend the time and effort to craft an essay that you are truly proud of and can hang on the refrigerator for years to come.
Plagiarized papers will be given a 0 out of 100 and you will be referred to the department chair. Plagiarism occurs any time you use another person’s information as if it were your own. There are multiple types of plagiarism, all of which will lead to this outcome. Don’t do it at all. If you are unclear about what plagiarism is, please speak with me.
Suggestions and examples:
Make sure you choose a topic that is also personal and interesting enough to you to make delving into it a worthwhile task. This paper might briefly become your life, so at least make it fun. Make sure you are able to explain why you are interested in the topic and why you think it’s important. This will be discussed in your rationale section.
Consider phrasing your thesis statement as a proposition of policy. Propositions of policy are persuasive statements that advocate for a specific course of action. They typically include words such as should/should not, must/must not, needs to/does not need to. For example:
- “Universities need to more proactively address and eradicate campus sexual violence.”
Do not simply summarize your sources, but also synthesize them. How are your sources interrelated? How are they different? Make sure to include your own voice. How do you feel about the literature? How do you understand the concept? What did you learn in this process? Do you feel that the literature is adequate? Should additional research be done to address the shortcomings in the available literature? Discuss this in great detail!
Good luck! Please see me if you have any additional questions.
