Lesson 1 Project 1 Assessment Assignment: Personality Assessment (Big 5 +3)
For this assignment you will need to complete and score a set of personality measures, as well as compute, compile, and analyze the scores.
Step 1. Making Predictions. Think about the relationship between the following 8 personality characteristics:
Stress
Self-Esteem
Overall Satisfaction with Life
Extroversion
Agreeableness
Conscientiousness
Negative Emotionality
Openness to Experience
Write down at least 3 predictions you might have about the relationships between any two of these variables. For example, you might predict the people who are more satisfied with life would have lower levels of stress, or that people who were more extroverted would have higher levels of self-esteem. Feel free to predict negative relationships, too (Life Satisfaction with Stress, or Openness to Experience with Introversion?). There are no right or wrong predictions; only hypotheses that you are going to put to the test!

Prediction #2_________________________________________________________________
Prediction #3__________________________________________________________________
Step 2: Complete the Measures. Complete each of the following measures and enter your scores on the Score Sheet below in the first column that says, (1) Your Scores:
The Perceived Stress Scale:

The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale

The Satisfaction with Life Scale

The Big 5 (provides 5 subscale scores: Extroversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Negative Emotionality, Openness to Experience)

Step 3: Recruiting Other Participants. Ask seven (7) other friends, family members or peers to complete the same instruments and enter their scores in columns 2 through 8. When you are done you should have 8 scores for each of 8 people (including yourself), for a total of 64 scores. (Feel free to ask other students in the course if they would be willing to share their scores, too, if you would prefer that over recruiting friends and family).
Step 4: Calculating the Correlations. Now go to this site to calculate the correlation among your eight different measures.
https://www.easycalculation.com/statistics/correlation-matrix.php
To compute your correlations, go to the field that asks for the number of your matrix and put 8. This will open an 8 X 8 matrix that will allow you to enter all of your scores. Enter them exactly as they appear in your matrix above. The first box in the matrix will be for your Perceived Stress Score, followed by the Perceived Stress Scores for each of your other 7 people to complete that first ROW. They you will be going down to the second ROW where you will begin by entering your Self-Esteem score, followed by the Self-Esteem scores for each of your other 7 people, and so on until you have entered all 8 of the scores for all 8 of your people and completed the entire matrix of scores.
Step 5. Calculate. When you have finished entering your scores, press CALCULATE and scroll down to find the correlation matrix that appears below. This will show the correlation between all of your measures. All correlations will be between 1 (reflecting perfect positive correlation) and -1 (reflecting perfect inverse, or negative correlation).
Step 6. Interpretation. Looking at the correlation matrix you will see that it shows the correlation of each measure with every other measure. The correlation between the first measure (Perceived Stress) and itself would be a perfect correlation (1.0). Moving to the right, the next correlation you will see is between your first measure (Perceived Stress) and your second measure (Self-Esteem), and so on.
Study your correlations to see what correlates with what. Look back at your three predictions in Step 1 above. Were they supported or not supported? Indicate the results below by putting the correlations you found and your interpretation of that correlation.
Prediction #1_______________________________________________________
Prediction #2_______________________________________________________
Prediction #3_______________________________________________________
Step 7. Other findings. In addition to your predictions, did you see any other findings of interest to you? Any surprises?
