NURS 350 Shane Saclayan WEEK 2 DISCUSSION PAPER

The United States spends more on health care compared to other high-income countries, but also has some of the lowest health outcomes.  According to Tikkanen and Abrams (2020), “in 2018, the U.S. spent 16.9 percent of gross domestic product on health care, nearly twice as much as the average [Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] OECD country.” Their report showed that the U.S. has the highest obesity rate which is a key risk factor for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. They also note that more than one quarter of U.S. adults have two or more chronic conditions.  One of the many complications of having chronic diseases is maternal death. According to Gunja et al. (2018), these chronic conditions, as well as lack in prenatal care, may be contributing to the U.S. having the highest maternal mortality rate due to complications from pregnancy or childbirth.
