The Assignment
Write a well-researched essay that highlights a public conversation or debate and answers a research question that engages readers. Your essay should 1) provide some historical background or context for the debate, 2) establish common ground with readers, 3) set forth the urgency of your argument, focus or perspective, 4) acknowledge critics and counterarguments. To recap, a successful essay will demonstrate
a focused perspective on a public conversation or debate,
an engaging research conversation,
credible source materials and credentials of sources,
synthesis of key terms,
accurate MLA/APA form, including how to integrate visuals or illustrations, how to integrate direct quotes with signal phrases, how to introduce, cite and comment on long quotations.

Criteria for Evaluation
You are being asked to demonstrate your proficiency in the following categories:
