Final Paper
Increasing funding for US Space program’s
Introduction
US Space program funding should increase as this area is vital to helping improve US technology, infrastructure, and its national security edge. This Area also has unique problems that need to be solved that can also in the future apply to everyday life, from computing power to medical technology to more fuel-efficient engines or even improve alternate energy at a faster rate like solar.
Background
US Space program funding has seen a lack of financing since Apollo missions to the moon. Safety concerns plagued the budget with the space shuttle program with Space shuttle Challenger bunning up after launch. “What would you do if you were an engineer working for a powerful company that overruled your directive to cancel an upcoming launch due to a faulty part- an action that led to catastrophic results? In Truth, Lies, and O-Rings, Allan McDonald addresses the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) decision to ignore his warnings, resulting in the destruction of the space shuttle Challenger and the deaths of its crew members.” A lack of interest in space exploration declining and the American people wanting funding to go to bigger issues at home. This problem affects everyone and every industry as NASA Space missions require innovations and ways to solve problems that seep their way into everyone’s everyday life. Without it, progress in most fields has slowed.
Side A
Increasing US Space programs can help with future challenges. Today’s widespread technology like MRI(Magnetic resonance imaging) can trace its history back to the US Space programs needed to solve space issues. The cost of not putting funding toward US Space programs could lead to inventions or problems not being solved that in the future could help with energy depends on or medical procedures., “what is at stake if the problem is not solved?” “So, while medical breakthroughs such as the CAT scan, MRI, and laser vision correction seem to be recent advances, the technology behind them was founded more than 30 years ago”
Side B
Some people may argue that we need to solve and put forth more funding for issues on earth like hunger, homelessness. Why should we look toward space when we have more significant problems at home? “Hunger and homelessness is increasing in American cities and is likely to get worse this year if threatened federal budget cuts kick in, according to a report from the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM)”. With bigger issues arising in America and budgets decreasing for things such as helping the homeless, the arguments are why should any funding be improved for US Space programs when they do not directly benefit or help the lives of struggling Americans.
Possible Solutions
The people and companies most vital to act are Congress and private companies like Boing, SpaceX, Blue origin. Congress can provide tax incentives to these private companies while also increasing the budget for NASA, which will alleviate R&D Nasa used to allocate for now can be handed over to private companies. Improving funding for Space programs helps all industries like the medical field and brings innovations to the population/world. One example is in heart related issues such as Rotary blood Pump. “NASA’s entry into blood pump technology began on a personal level. A NASA engineer suffering from congestive heart failure met with famed pioneer heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey while receiving a heart transplant. As a result of their discussion, a team of NASA engineers and contractors was formed to apply the expertise gained in solving space exploration problems to benefit people with congestive heart failure.” Increasing this funding will ultimately force some funding from things the average American may think is more critical than space, like world hunger or homelessness.
Conclusion
For the US to help improve its infrastructure, economy and maintain its national security edge, the budget for US Space programs needs to be improved along with the private sector being utilized to bring down the cost. When we look to the stars and innovations in medicine, energy, and technology, there is no faster way to enhance everything than to solve space exploration issues. With a joint effort between private organizations (SpaceX, Blue origin) and NASA, Safety and the fund can be improved and achievable.
