A good teacher knows when his or her students are engaged. When the textbook provided doesn’t engage the students, it is important that the teacher diversifies their instruction. Research shows that students need to feel connected to, and recognize the value of, the curriculum in order to be more engaged (Cleary & Kitsantas, 2017). Self-regulated learning (SRL) can help students make those connections.
As Dr. Banas (2021) explains in this week’s module, it is important for teachers to conduct an “audience analysis.” We need to know our students as people in order to be able to motivate them. It is essential that we know the students to help them realize the value of an assignment and to help them feel confident in their ability to master it. Using the ARCS model can provide a framework for teachers to consider the motivation of their students while building their lesson plans.

Sometimes we may feel that the curriculum at our schools are too textbook-dependent. We seek to integrate more self-regulated learning techniques to help better engage our students. A strategy that we learned about this week really stuck out to me. I love the idea of changing my classroom into a TARGET Classroom. The first component, Task, refers to what the students are asked to do (Banas, 2021). I could try to make the tasks more student-directed and give them the chance to set goals for their success (Banas, 2021). For example, I teach math, so I could have them work in teams to create a word problem about division and have them solve it however they want. This would give them the interest in being able to write the word problem of their choice and also be able to decide how they will show their skills. This will be really motivating!
Another strategy that I found interesting that we learned about this week was ARCS. ARCS stands for attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (Banas, 2021). This strategy can really motivate my students in many ways. First, in regard to attention, when we get the students interested or we pique their interest, this gets them motivated to listen and participate (Banas, 2021). Relevance, I believe, is becoming a key component to the modern-day classroom. We have to have the students link the instruction to their goals, motivations, and what they know (Banas, 2021). Building confidence is so important because the students are more motivated and productive when they feel confident in themselves and their ability. Lastly, satisfaction is, I believe, the most important part. We want the students to feel successful. We want them to feel motivated either intrinsic or extrinsic (Banas, 2021). If the students feel satisfied after a task, they are more willing to work hard and try again in the future.
