Re: Personal Statement for Reinstatement Appeal

Dear Committee on Academic Standing,

Introduction Paragraph:

I am writing this statement to the Committee on Academic Standing towards my Reinstatement Appealfor Summer and/or Fall 2021 (change semester if needed) at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY). Describe your enrollment in the college with regards to your major, how many credits accumulated. State that you want to be given an additional chance to prove yourself academically and lead into the reasons for why in your body paragraph(s).

Body Paragraph:

Give detail descriptions as to why you were not able to perform to the best of your ability for over the past two semesters.

What happened in your life during the semester(s) that affected your grades/attendance?

How have these circumstances changed or improved so that they will no longer affect your studies?

Here are sample reasons that you can use as they are applicable to you. Write it in essay form, not bullet form and indicate if you will be providing hard copy material for the reasons:

COVID-19 (illness, disruption from in-person to online coursework, work impact, etc.)

Death in the family (programs, obituaries, plane tickets, etc.)

Mental health breakdowns (letter from therapist/psychiatrist describing treatment)

Physical health implications (letters from doctors describing persistent issues as well as documentation indicating admission(s) and discharge(s) from the hospital)

Familial obligations/Change in work hours (paystubs from employer demonstrating need to work additional hours, lease showing high amount for rent per month, utility bill(s), budget letters for public assistance/SNAP)

Schedule conflicts and challenging transportation commutes (classes too early in the morning or late at night)

Residential/housing difficulties (letter from shelter unit, notarized letter from representative for room rental)

Examples include personal or immediate family illness (medical, psychological), legal, employment changes, death of an immediate family member, academic factors, etc.

Conclusion Paragraph:

Indicate what you will do differently moving forward to obtain exceptional grades and graduate with your AA/AS/AAS, what your career path is, and aspirations for yourself. What will you do differently to improve your academics in the future? What resources are you going to use?

Sincerely,
