Post: Ending Poverty in all Forms

The United Nations realizes that ending poverty in all forms is the most significant global challenge to achieve sustainable development (United Nations, n.d.). Therefore, the sustainable development goal I have selected is no poverty.

Poverty is widespread throughout low- and high-income countries. In 2015, it was estimated that 734 million people live in extreme poverty living on less than $1.90 a day (United Nations, n.d.). Poverty includes a lack of access to basic needs such as food, education, healthcare, transportation, clean water, and housing (United Nations, n.d.). Globally poverty devastates the lives of many individuals around the world, leading to worse health outcomes, increased crime rates, and lack of education (Kellogg, N). Without meeting these basic needs, individuals cannot carry out meaningful contributions to their society or live a quality life, impacting the world negatively (United Nations, n.d.). Poverty is a global issue that affects the world population’s health and sustainability (Chen et al., 2019).

I have chosen no poverty because of the overall impact poverty has on the world, because as a nurse I have seen many patients and members of the community struggle with making ends meet. I have had patients readmitted for exacerbations of diseases because they cannot afford or access their medication.

Additionally, I have seen a tremendous number of admissions related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) because individuals did not have the ability to social distance or access to adequate hygiene measures to prevent transmission. Lastly, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global recession that is expected to increase extreme poverty throughout 2021 (Lanker et al., 2021). Therefore, understanding the importance of global poverty and its burden on the world is important now more than ever.
