This assignment is an opportunity to explore the ways in which images communicate specific and intentional meaning in the mind of the viewer. It is also intended to encourage a critical and analytical approach to image-based communications in our digital world.

First, please read the short essay by Barry C. Lynn, “The Big Tech Extortion Racket,” Harper’s (September 2020)

.

Then select a contemporary example (something from the past two or three years) of image-based communications such as a political message or photo-op, a commercial advertisement, a web-site or social network, a music video, or the like. Please nothing on Childish Gambino (I’ve read way too many of those over the years). Develop a short presentation (using powerpoint, keynote, google docs, or other software) to analyze and interpret the communication. The presentation should include at least five still images or five short video clips (15 seconds each, maximum) and at least five hundred words. If you prefer, you can create the presentation using a word processing program.

Among the issues you may want to explore in the presentation are:

Who created the communication, for what audience(s), and for what purpose?

What information do the various images convey and how do they contribute to the message?

How does the design scheme (pattern, arrangement, color, etc.) contribute to the message?

But, above all, the key is to take a critical approach. Are you being manipulated? Whose interests are being served? Some reference to the issues raised in the Lynn essay above will improve your presentation.
