PURPOSE:

The purpose of these reflections is to demonstrate your understanding of the course concepts by exploring them in your life. Please do not merely summarize the textbook or provide vocabulary definitions. I want to see how you apply what you’ve learned from the textbook to your experience outside of the classroom. Which theories help you make sense of yourself and your interactions? Why? How?

TASK:

In 2-3 pages, double spaced, explore your thoughts on chapters 7, 8 and 9. Use 12 pt Times New Roman font, w/ 1 inch margins. No title or class information is necessary. You are not required to write in a formal essay style, but please read through and proofread before submitting.

You may answer as many questions as you like to reach the page minimum, but keep in mind the idea is to explore your thoughts and provide depth.

***Relate to 3 class concepts (put in bold)***

Class concepts are the concepts and terms from your textbook that we have discussed in class. For example you could talk about regulation, cooperative principles, and “you” vs “I” language. THESE ARE JUST EXAMPLES. You can talk about any course concept from the chapter, I just want to see you link it!

RUBRIC:

Before you start, review the rubric at the bottom of the page to familiarize yourself with the grading criteria.

PROMPT:

Please response to one prompt for each chapter. Thank you!

Language chapter (7)

THINK. What people or topics cause you to become defensive? How have you responded? Which (dogmatic, superior, indifferent or controlling) messages did you use?

DESCRIBE a conflict once using “I” language, and another time using “you” language (as though you are talking to the person with whom you have the conflict). How does your perception of the conflict change based on language?

Conflict (9)

Analyze a conflict on one of your favorite TV shows (just one episode). Describe the scenario and provide examples of specific conflict strategies used. What was constructive or destructive in this conflict? How could the characters have improved the situation?

Test your understanding of destructive thoughts – self quiz on page 275. Recall a conflict in which you and the other person exchanged destructive messages, such as sudden-death statements or dirty secrets. What led to them being said? What impact did these messages have on the conflict? How did they affect your relationship?

Think of an unsolvable conflict you’ve had. What made it unsolvable? How did the dispute affect your relationship? Looking back on the situation, could you have one anything differently to prevent the conflict from becoming unsolvable? If so, what?
