Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis Methods Assignment Instructions

Overview

Many public health program evaluations involved collecting qualitative data can responses from program participants. The public health professional must be able to design research that will efficiently and effectively collect and analyze qualitative data.

Instructions

Read the fictional scenario below and the Jacobsen text Introduction to Health Research Methods: A Practical Guide chapter 13. Then formulate qualitative methods which could be used to determine attitudes and beliefs toward the public health issue described in the scenario. Use the required headings shown below as a template:

Sample

Briefly describe the population from which the sample will be drawn and how subjects comprising the sample will be recruited

Data Collection

One qualitative data collection method (i.e.- focus group, interview, photo voice, etc.),

Two questions designed to supply qualitative responses.

Analysis

Method of analysis. The analysis plan may include what software will be used and the specific methods (i.e.- coding, thematic analysis, etc.)

Consider the research population and standard research ethics as you formulate your proposed method. Your proposed method should be 250-350 words in length, include at least one reference to a scholarly source to support your method, and use proper AMA formatting.

Scenario: Influenza is a preventable disease that often has a high incidence, especially in schools and university populations. You are a public health researcher interested in understanding attitudes and beliefs regarding influenza vaccination among college students. The results will be used to inform future campus health initiatives aimed at decreasing the incidence of influenza in the student population.

Specific tasks in this assignment include:

Identifying a population from which to take a sample

Explaining how qualitative data can be collected in order to address the research issue

Detailing how the qualitative data have can be collated/coded into meaningful units of analysis.
