Reflective Essay Question:
Referring to one of the following issues, make a case as to whether police ought to be reformed, where reform may include defunding or abolition.
Police discretion
Pandemic policing
New visibility of policing
Deaths after police contact
Police brutality
Trust in police
NB: In the context of answering this question, ‘reform’ of police can be interpreted in the broad sense of the term, including, for example, minor reforms or more major reforms such as expansion, or alternatively, defunding or abolition of police. You might also include specific strategies/ types/ tools of reform such as training, recruitment etc.
The question and choices are deliberately wide enough so that you can frame your answer to address an issue you are interested in exploring. There are many issues you can seek to discuss via way of the issues listed above, including – but not limited to – matters such as community policing, counter-policing, settler colonialism, Indigenous self-determination, non-state policing and so on. The aim is for you to have space to be creative.
Essay Directions:
The total word count for this essay is 1,000 words. It is worth 20% of your overall grade. The amount of work put into the task should reflect this (including proofreading).
You are required to answer this ONE essay question, relating to weeks 2-3 of the unit.
Your short essay must be properly structured (with a brief introduction and conclusion) and appropriately referenced. You may choose your referencing system (ie Harvard in-text or footnotes), but you must be correct and consistent.
You must conduct extra research beyond the essential tutorial readings for the course and the relevance of your research materials will be assessed.
You will be assessed on the quality and relevance of your research. You are encouraged to use databases, online journals as well as texts held in the library. You are also encouraged to review relevant reports/policy etc and appropriate online sources.
The ‘10% either way’ dictum does not apply to this assessment. Please write no more than 1,000 words.
References are not included in the word count.
Your essay must be word-processed in 12-point, Times New Roman font, 1.5 spaced and appropriately referenced, with page numbers.
Please use more than 7 references. (8 are good but you can add more if you want, I have also attached a word document with some suggested articles)

NOTE: please use this essay structure:
INTRO: (don’t use any in text references here) talk about what is the topic and how we will analyse it.
BODY: please provide the argument, how police is trusted how it is not, provide examples (Australian based if possible) what we can do to fix the issue regarding the reform, the defunding and the abolitions of the issue (2-3 paragraphs I think they are enough, If you want you can have more than that)
CONCLUSION: conclude the main points about trusting in police, don’t introduce new in text references.
