Research project: The research project is a project where you design a research based on
survey data provided to you. You can either work on your own as an individual
project or find a partner and work as a TWO-person team project (three or more person project will NOT be accepted). The project will involve:
• Asking a research question that can be answered using the data provided to you
• Research into the literature and provide a theoretical rationale or background review
for your research question.
• Utilizing the techniques covered in class to analyze the data in R
• Interpret and write up your findings
You will write up your research project in a mini academic paper format (about 2000
words). Present your analyses and insights accompanied by attractive graphs and/or
tables).
You are encouraged to break down your research project into the following steps.
Introduction of your research: Ask a research question that interests you based the data
provided to you. In general, you will investigate the association between two variables
(e.g., does higher education lead to higher income?). You will provide a theoretical
rationale for your research. For example, you will explain, how would you expect your
two main variables (one is dependent variable, and another is independent variable) to be
related theoretically? Are they likely to be strongly or weakly related, do you think? Is
one likely to cause or influence the other? Do this before examining the relationship
between the two variables. For example, why tall people (height) are likely to earn more
(income)? Asking a good and researchable question is important for future steps. Please
see a general guideline here
(http://www.yorku.ca/act/CBR/ResearchQuestionInfoSheet.doc). If you are not sure
about your research question, please come and talk to the instructor.
Univariate analysis of your main variables. You will use the data provided to you and
examine each variable individually. What do the variables measure or assess? What are
their levels of measurement? What do their distributions look like in this dataset?
Bivariate analysis of the association between your variables. Examining the
relationship between the variables. Describe and summarize the relationship between the
two variables. You may have to recode or transform the variables to make the
relationship more intelligible. How are the variables related to one another, if at all? If
they are related, how strong is the relationship?
Interpretation and final write up. You will provide some interpretive insights regarding
your findings. For example, what is the relationship between the variables? Were your
theoretical expectations met?

Research question:
How does socioeconomic status affect the covid rates among visible minorities?
Independent variable:
Socioeconomic status (Socio-economic factors include occupation, education, income, wealth and where someone lives)
Dependent variable:
Covid rates
Unit of analysis:
Visible minorities In Canada
