Topic 2 DQ 1
Interprofessional collaboration in the healthcare industry is the joint teamwork among multiple healthcare providers to achieve evidence-based practices from different experts for improved patient outcomes (Moss, Seifert, & O’Sullivan, 2016). Such approach to healthcare brings the best in the field to identify effective interventions to reduce medical errors to deliver culturally competent care. Teamwork reduces the stress on healthcare for them to provide efficient services without errors. In addition, improves job satisfaction to ease the mind of healthcare providers to think critically about medical and nursing interventions to reduce errors to provide higher-quality care (Bosch, & Mansell, 2015). Interprofessional collaboration outline’s role clarity, trust and confidence in other healthcare providers, ability to overcome adversities, and collective leadership with common goal to deliver competent care to improve safety (Bosch, & Mansell, 2015). Role clarity improves the safety of services as specialized healthcare providers are tasked to execute specific roles to the full extent of their education and training. Healthcare providers deliver the higher quality care when they work in teams and have confidence and trust in their members to perform quality work and to provide constructive feedback to improve their own output. Collaboration brings more eyes to the job at hand and members serve as support systems for each other to prevent adversities to reduce medical errors and increase safety (Bosch, & Mansell, 2015). An emerging trend of interprofessional collaboration is in the field of research, education and clinical practice which is bringing healthcare providers together which research is the foundation to identify the problems in healthcare to develop effective interventions to improve patient outcomes and safety (Green, & Johnson, 2015).

Interpersonal collaboration is an approach designed and extremely important in meeting the complex nature of health care system. Interpersonal collaboration (ICP) can be defined as the total cooperative arrangement in which two or more parties work together for the purpose of completing a task or achieving a common goal. Nurses or a single member of healthcare team can not provide quality of healthcare to the people, hence ICP is required in this regard. Interpersonal collaboration in healthcare system is a workable partnership among different healthcare professionals in ensuring quality of health care is provided to the public. According to Whitney, 2018 stated that ICP is an ever changing system that connects many healthcare professionals and related service providers towards the common goal of providing quality patient`s care. In achieving quality of health care, interpersonal collaboration has been demostrated in preventing adverse medication effects, decrease mortality and morbidity rates and also improved medication dosage calculation errors. The benefits of ICP has also reduced the stress level of healthcare team through a more coordinated plan of care.(Bosch et al., 2015). Quality of care is guranteed as healthcare professionals understand each other`s roles and responsibilities orchestrated by ICP thereby reduces the time and cost of hospitalization, reduces readmission rate, decreases hospitalization and tremendously improves healthcare for older adults with chronic diseases. Interpersonal collaboration has proven to enhance patient`s satisfaction, reduces medical errors and improve quality of healthcare. Example of the importance of Interpersonal collaboration is demostarted in patient with respiratory prpblem like pneumonia and with sepsis, as the patient presents with respiratory challenges would be first assessed by respiratory therapy, the doctor makes medical diagnosis, ordered some blood works and diagnostic investigations and ordered some medications and treatments to this patient while the nurse makes nursing diagnosis and administer both nursing and medical treatments as ordered and  pharmacist ensure availability of drugs and ensuring the right doses available. The case manager assesses patient`s living condition, ensure the insurance and offered some assitance where possible even after the discharge of the patient. The team work is to provide quality of care to the patient and made possible through ICP.

Interprofessional collaboration is seen as potentially a powerful strategy for achieving optimal health out come. Better coordination of care is thought to result from increased communication and understanding of each professionals role (Prentic, Engle & Stobbe, 2015). Interprofessional collaboration considered as a new standard in healthcare delivery that aids in reducing the patints errors and healthcare costs along with it have proved to improve communication among the health care providers optimizing the health of patient and family they serve. To ensure the best delivery of healthcare, direct and open communication among all patients healthcare team including physician, nurses, therapist, pharmacist and care coordinator plays a crucial role ensuring patients safety and integrated approach to patient care.

Interprofessional attitudes/stereotypes, niterprofessional mistrust, and ways of thinking and behavior, have been identified among the variable that could stregthen the boundaries and hinder the interprofessional collaboration (Irajpour & Alavi, 2015). It is believed that the interprofessional boundaries are made through a process known as professionalization, each health care profession has a different cluture which includes valuse, beliefs, attitudes, customs, and behaviors which contributes challenges to the effective interprofessional collaboration. Sometimes interprofessional cllaboration on patient can be personally and professionaly demanding, time consuming and team members might persume the team menbers of healthcare team trust each other which is not the case always, It is essential to develop relationship and trust between the healtcare team members which need time knowing each other and to built trust, which is constrained by time pressure and unable to meet on face to face basis. However, we can overcome the chasm that exists between disciplines and improve understanding of the health care team members roles and value which each member contributes to the team, this might contribute to the succes of interprofessional collaboration (Prentice, Engle & Stobbe,2015).

Professional collaboration is essential for the success of any team. In healthcare, interprofessional collaboration is the background of many successful healthcare processes and practices. Through collaboration, nurses can work together with different care providers to improve the care quality and patient outcomes. Interprofessional collaboration enhances communication and coordination between healthcare professionals (Wei et al., 2020). Both the individual and the skills for the teams work together, aiming to ensure high-quality care that is impossible working alone. Nurses and healthcare providers can develop suitable plans that work well for patients and enhance trust and teamwork.

Interprofessional collaboration implies mutual respect, honest communication, and setting common goals between healthcare professionals, especially nurses and physicians. If nurses and physicians discuss different treatment options, they learn from each other (Fleming & Willgerodt, 2017). Both professions are updated on the latest treatments that enable them to make informed decisions, which improves the care process. There is open communication between all the staff members, which makes the process of decision-making effective.

A trend that will change the nature of interprofessional collaboration is that of Interprofessional Education. Nurses need to be trained on different strategies and ways to improve performance and patient safety and improve communication (Visser et al., 2019). This education aims to educate the nurses and physicians on how to work together to enhance sound performance in healthcare. The main goal of IPE is to prepare the healthcare professional students with the right skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will help improve interprofessional collaboration. Through this trend, patients will acquire safe and high-quality care when the healthcare practitioners can work well in teams, communicate well while also understanding the role of every individual. Through this education, all the healthcare professionals are well aware of how they can coordinate the healthcare process to acquire high-quality care.

Interprofessional collaboration in healthcare will help not only to reduce errors, provide higher-quality care, and increase safety but also to provide better collaborative care to patients. Collaboration in health care has been shown to improve patient outcomes such as reducing preventable adverse drug reactions, decreasing morbidity and mortality rates, and optimizing medication dosages. Teamwork has also been shown to provide benefits to health care providers, including reducing extra work and increasing job satisfaction (Bosch & Mansell, 2015).

An example of a current or emerging trend that will require more, or change the nature of, interprofessional collaboration is Opioid use and the Opioid Crisis. Prior to the mid-1990s, pain control for individuals was often poorly managed. In response, advocates, such as the American Pain Society, proposed changes in pain-management practices (McNiff, 2018). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, since 2000, the rate of deaths from drug overdoses has increased by 137%, including a 200% increase in overdose deaths involving opioids. These increases included heroin, which is an illegally made opioid, and illicitly manufactured fentanyl, which is a synthetic opioid. If there is interprofessional relationship within healthcare providers, there will be an established relationship and communication. Each doctor will know what is being prescribed by the other and will help curb this pandemic (McNiff, 2018).

During the current challenges in the healthcare industry, it is important that there should be improved collaboration and teamwork to improve the efficiency of each employee and thus department. The improved communication among the employees and between management and staff members will reduce rework and deliver the faster results. As there is staff shortage, it is important that staff members should collaborate with each other and do not religiously stick to their job roles and duties especially when staff members feel that they can assist other members. This collaboration will not only improve the department to deliver quicker output but it will also result in better patient outcome. Moreover, all the employees in a department should work as a single unit and focus on overall output rather than individual output (Mitchell & Golden, 2012). An emerging trend would be the use of collaborative technology platforms like Skype for maximum efficiency. Due to the large number of documentation at multiple points and processes, sometimes employees are not able to deliver but if they collaborate with each other and communicate, it will definitely improve the overall productivity without compromising with any process. Thus, Collaboration, teamwork and communication would be the main ingredient to deal with the challenges in future
