I will be discussing my understanding of this weeks reading, how my overall view of logistics has changed, and what I’m taking away from this class.
When examining the reading it shows how important Maritime transportation is to the world wide transportation. For instance when the Ever Given was suck in the Suez Canal for 6 days and it is estimated that $ 9 billions dollars a day goes through it. That’s roughly $ 54 Billion dollars of goods that were delayed due to the canal being blocked.
Prior to taking this class, I didn’t take into consideration that every business requires some sort of transportation management. I never thought that ever business big or small would need to utilize logistics for some aspect. Efficient transportation can also be the difference between completing the task and being delayed in completing the task. For example just because a train may be cheaper it may be more efficient to utilize a cargo truck instead. This is all depends on how fast you want/ need the item.
One thing I may take into consideration when looking at my job, is the different methods of transportation. If for some reason we aren’t able to take a plane, you can always use a cargo truck or even a ship if its not a rushed order. For transportation it comes down to two things, money and efficiency. If they find a method that is efficient but may cost a little extra they may use it. I can always apply this to the military in supply due to the increase numbers of members deploying the sooner we run out of stuff and must order it but verify that it is the cheapest option and also the most efficient.

We have reached the final week of the class and this has been a very informative journey. From this weeks reading I have come to understand that my field of work is every evolving. I have been in the logistics and transportation field since I was 18, both in the military and civilian communities. Things have changed over the years and they are still changing and for some points getting better. The steps to help improve the stresses and damages that happen to the environment are some of the primary areas. The things that I have learned from this class are the changes in both the U.S. and Europe when it comes to moving freight. The changes that have happened in both countries were important for their trade and livelihood. The utilization of waterways and the intermodal system are integral for the smooth movement of goods from one point to another point. The concept of piggyback movements and tractor trains is something that is seen more in the Midwest and the West coast due to more open highways and this good for shippers when it comes to moving the most freight to the final destinations. This course has helped me understand the finer points of the intermodal system as well as how important it is to ensure that items reach their final destination with no issues. There is not much that I can take back to work tomorrow that I have learned from this class. The main thing that I can emphasize to my fellow workers is to ensure that they follow all safety protocols and procedures that are in place for the safe and proper movement of goods on our trailers.
