Rhetorical Analysis by Dana Hedgpeth’s
“So many pets have been adopted during the pandemic that shelters are running out”
Typically, people who have time for a dog adopt one and those who don’t have time for one just go without. Dana’s article is based on these fluffy animals that people are loving more and more every day. Dogs have always been a huge part in human lives whether they are apart of your family or just simply a stray dog crossing the street that everyone feels sorry for. This article was published during a time when everyone was bored out of their mind at home, needed company but since the states was shutdown people weren’t able to have guest over, so why not get a fluffy friend. In “So many pets have been adopted during the pandemic that shelters are running out,” Dana Hedgpeth effectively uses real life reviews and comments from the customers to achieve her goal of getting people to understand that they are going through a crisis by the number of adopters to number of animals they have available ratio is nowhere near one to one. Overall, Dana Hedgpeth succeeds at reaching her intended audience of dog lovers and people who are looking forward to adopting dogs by explaining how they might not come and get what they are looking for and if this rate keeps up their business won’t last long.
Dana wrote this article to get this message out to as many people as she could, this was the best problem that an animal shelter could ever face. While the pandemic was going on people were having to deal with their kids all day every day, people were mentally drained questioning if the world would ever go back normal, so basically they were looking for a distraction from life, which was a dog. The purpose of an animal shelter is to rescue these animals off the street and give them a second chance at life. This article highlights something that is good/positive about the pandemic and quarantining while most people is just completely mad at the entire situation.
Dana uses customers personal reviews to get the readers attention constantly throughout the article. “For me, the pandemic was the perfect time to get a dog because I had more time now to spend with him… he’s apart of our family now,” this quote gives the reader an idea that these animals are life changing. This is an appeal to pathos, the author wants to connect the customers emotions to the readers emotions by showing how hard people are trying to get these dogs. The author then goes on to continue showing appeal to pathos by stating the one customer “put in at least eight applications and finally got one,” the author wanted to give the reader an idea of how bad people wanted these dogs at this time
