Summary of Results – Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory
Upon completion of the Work Environment Assessment by Clark (2015), my organization received a score of 87, which indicates that my workplace is moderately healthy. My workplace is civil. I am certain that the civility of my workplace is due to the great leadership our manager has.
Every member has respect for one another, and we work very well together. Each member lives by a shared vision and mission based on trust and respect. This shared mission and vision has created a united team working together towards the same goals. The team that we have at my workplace values the work they do, and a sense of purpose is conformed in all of us. We have great communication, teamwork, and collaboration, and we take action when needed. Every employee would recommend our organization as a great place to work!
Having a score of 87 is a clear indication of the leadership skills demonstrated by our manager who is very focused on the staffs health and wellness.
Identify two things that surprised you about the results. Also identify one idea that you believed prior to conducting the Assessment that was confirmed.
My organization is moderately healthy despite the fact that there is staffing issues.
I really was not completely surprised of the results. The organization I work for is a great place. I feel that there could be more advancements made towards education and leadership. There is an issue with staffing and nursing shortage and t here is a need to provide for career advancement and promotions.
My organization does not provide for competitive salaries, benefit, or other rewards. An example of this is that new nurses hired at my organization are receiving a huge sign on bonus, and their starting wage is the same of a nurse that has been there for 25 years. This has caused issues.
Also, if you are part time and you come in on your day off, you receive $10 more an hour. This is also causing an issue. The full-time employees are wanting answers.
As far as career opportunities, my organization is not focused on such, this leads to a big disappointment because there are several staff members who would like to advance into leadership, and they are not being encouraged to do so and it is because of the staffing issues that we have hospital wide.
What do the results of the Assessment suggest about the health and civility of your workplace?
The results of the assessment suggest that the facility I work for is a good healthy place to work.
My workplace is civil.
There is always room for improvement. There is a great deal of trust amongst the nurses on my unit. Civility is hard to come by right now given the amount of anxiety with COVID variant ramping up. It is mandatory to wear a mask in my hospital, whether you are an employee, a patient, or a visitor. If you do not have a mask on, you are escorted out of the hospital by security. As an employee of the organization, the results of the assessment confirms that there is great leadership in my workplace.
Briefly describe the theory or concept presented in the article(s) you selected.
Explain how the theory or concept presented in the article(s) relates to the results of your Work Environment Assessment.
The conceptual model of Clark and Oleander that is presented in the reading by Clark et al. (2011) represents effective leadership, civility, and incivility in the workplace.
The concept relates to the results of the assessment by indicating that having an awareness of negativity can result in poor nursing practices, increased workloads, especially with nursing shortages and noncompliance. I believe that current leadership is a high stressed area due to the fact that they are trying to keep COVID out of the hospital. There are updated regarding COVID each day.
Explain how your organization could apply the theory highlighted in your selected article(s) to improve organizational health and/or create stronger work teams. Be specific and provide examples.
Effective communication with a desire to lead opens trust.
Continue to lead us with confidence in knowing that whatever changes we may face, we will face them together as a unit and a community. For those times when anxiety is high, the chance of incivility is also high. This is the time to take a step back and regroup. As healthcare workers, the need for civility is a must. We need to be civil to motivate one another. By recognizing the Clark and Oleander conceptual framework, my workplace can continue to develop strong interprofessional relationships, maintain outstanding patient and staff satisfaction scores, and provide exceptional, compassionate patient care.
