Assignment Brief

The assignment is to produce a research proposal for a piece of qualitative research which addresses a topic of interest to you from those studied during the Social and Developmental Psychology module. In order to do this effectively you need to consider where there are gaps in knowledge and what research needs to be covered. It is important that you are not just replicating an existing study as you will not be able to demonstrate your ability to problem solve by doing this and this is one of the essential criteria for you are being assessed on.

There are two pieces of coursework for this module. This particular assessment makes up 50 % of the marks for this module. There are specific sections which are expected within this and more detailed guidance is given below. It is important to note that you will not be asked to run this research. You are being tested on your design ability rather than administration ability here. However, this does not imply the research could not be run. You need to design research which would be possible and practical for a student of your ability and resources. This is particularly important to consider when you look at aspects like recruiting participants, sample sizes and time implications for participants. It is vital that your proposed research uses only qualitative methods.

Expected Sections

The submitted report should contain the following sections:

Brief overview of existing literature (approximately 400 words), including:

Research aim or hypothesis to be tested.

The aim of this section is to demonstrate how your proposed research fits within the research field and to demonstrate your ability to recognize gaps in the literature.

Methodology section (approximately 750 words) which may contain details of:

Design

Participants

Materials

Procedure

Ethical issues which should be considered

The aim of this section is to illustrate how you will operationalize your research. It should be clear from reading this section in full how your research will take place and why you have made the research decisions which you have in design. Your research question(s) should be explicitly stated.

Analysis plan (approximately 350 words)

This section should document how you would go about interpreting the data you plan to gather. As this is a qualitative method you will need to explain how you would go about analysing that data: using which research tools and justifying your methodologies.

Marking criteria

The criteria your work will be assessed on follows. Please note that the criteria are not necessarily equally weighted.

Understanding of research gaps:

In this criterion we are assessing your ability to recognize gaps in the literature and formulate appropriate research questions to address those gaps.

Problem solving:

In this criterion we are assessing your ability to deal with any problems in the design process. All research has to operate within specific parameters: difficulties in accessing participants; funding limitations, time barriers. Here we look at how you work around those problems.

Writing conventions

In this criterion we are assessing your ability to follow the rules and structure of psychology research proposals.

Ethical considerations

In this criterion we are assessing your understanding of ethical issues as they impact research in this field. You will need to consider impact on participants, yourself and other key stakeholders, as relevant, of your research.

Communication

In this criterion we are assessing your overall ability to communicate effectively. This criterion assesses, but is not limited to, the overall persuasiveness of the piece, spelling, grammar and language choice.

Whilst referencing is not being assessed as a specific criterion in this assignment poor referencing will cap your overall grade at the pass level.
