For this Module’s assignment, you will explore a webpage called the ‘Homicide Report’ and apply concepts from Chapter 5 to what you observe.

The site, a part of the LA Times, was founded about two decades ago, and it is committed to putting ‘on the record’ each and every homicide that happens in LA County. You can click on the map and see each and every case of homicide over the period of time that you select. Some of the individual stories are quite short, while others go into a lot of detail about the case. Please take a half hour or so to explore the website, select different periods of time (click on the ‘more’ icon), read a few of the stories, and then answer the following three questions.

1) Describe how homicide is distributed in LA County. Does its occurrence seem to change over time? What stands out to you about the distribution of homicide across the county? (One Paragraph) Here your answer 150 words or more.

2) How would Shaw and McKay’s Social Disorganization theory explain the patterns in homicide that you see in Los Angeles County? Drawing on the material in the text, what would be a critique of this explanation? (Two Paragraphs) Here your answer 300 words or more.

3) What stood out to you about the individual stories that you read? Can you make a connection between any of the theories or concepts that we’ve covered in the first four modules and these stories? (One paragraph) Here your answer 150 words or more.
