Robotic Combat Vehicle Thesis and Sentence Outline
Question: Are the implementation of the Robotic Combat Vehicle producing a less lethal Soldier?
Thesis Statement: Robotic Combat Vehicles will cause warfighters to lose basic Soldier combat skills and completely reliant on technology.
Introduction
The Army, throughout its history has developed technology with the intent to produce a more lethal organization capable of engaging and destroying enemies of the United States in close combat. Over time, the very technology developed to create lethal Soldiers is not making them complacent and less lethal. The Robotic Combat Vehicle is among one of the newest modernization and is equipped with autonomous features which allows it to navigate terrain. It can detect enemy, give distance and direction and engage with accuracy.
Thesis Statement: Robotic Combat Vehicles will cause warfighters to lose basic Soldier combat skills and completely reliant on technology.
Expanded Thesis statement: The Robotic Combat Vehicle will enable a less lethal Soldier in three categories. 1) Reduced opportunity to practice Basic Soldier, skill level one task. 2) Complacency through the use of technology. 3) Removal of the human factor on the battle field
Arguments
What difference will the RCV’s have if the tactics do not adapt to reflect its capabilities?
The Army seeks to modernize its capabilities to compete with competitors such as China and Russia. Though the efforts are well thought out there are aspects of how we fight operationally and tactically which is structured for the warfighter on the ground. Incorporating a new technology to replace the job of a Solider will require a new set of tactics and operational considerations.
If not, the Army opens up to unnecessary risk and possibly sunken cost.
Is the Military becoming over reliant on technology to the point they negate basic Soldier skills?
Yes, the 21st century is a technology centric era where citizens can speak to a device and a package can show up at their door. Today, our service members use Global Positioning Systems to navigate everywhere and become paralyzed if that capability is removed. Land navigation is a basic Soldiers skill that is perishable over time.
The RCV is coming equipped with autonomous features to navigate to a point destined. The possibility of a cyberattack on any system is very plausible. If or when that happens, Soldiers will have to return to the basics to complete the mission. The alternative is to use the RCVs to compliment the Solider on the battlefield and not replace. Making a stronger, lethal, unstoppable force.
Is the Army incurring unnecessary risk by removing the human aspect on the battle field?
The idea of controlling a 10,000 pound vehicle with a remote control sounds very cool, and it is. Just like a video game, players take risk that would never be considered in real life because of the results of pulling a trigger. However, the RCV brings the video game to life.
The second thought to pull a trigger does not resonate as if the person was looking down the sight. Psychologically, it may remove the remorse of making a bad decision because the decision was make from miles
Conclusion
The RCV causes Soldiers to become complacent as a result of relying solely on the capabilities the RCV provides
Failure to incorporate basic Soldier skill repetitions will result in a loss in individual craft because most skills are perishable if not exercised.
The remote function on the RCV removes the human factor from combat which is what saves civilian lives
