A qualitative research design will be applied in the current study in the form of a semi-structured clinical interview. Employing the qualitative approach would be helpful in exploring the perceived therapeutic benefits of hypnosis as an intervention among graduate students. The qualitative method is the best approach to use for this study because it offers open-ended questions and raw human experience.
Grounded Theory
Grounded theory is the type of qualitative research design used in the current study. Humbeeck et al. (2015) define grounded theory as a systematic practice of data analysis associated with qualitative studies that permit researchers to establish a theory that delineates a particular phenomenon. Grounded theory was used in this study based on its significance, including offering specific strategies for tackling the analytic stage of inquiry, providing an explicit, sequential framework for conducting qualitative research, integrating and streamlining data gathering and analysis, and advancing conceptual analysis of qualitative data.
Moreover, grounded theory is one of the research designs that legitimizes qualitative study as a scientific inquiry. The fact that grounded theory approaches have gained their place as a standard social research technique and have influenced various researchers from different professions and disciplines made the study design relevant for the current study, which is the perceived therapeutic benefits of hypnosis among first-year graduate students in a psychology program.
Participants
The current study will recruit a single participant (n=1) via email among the researcher’s cohort. The participant will go through an initial interview to provide personal and professional information, including demographics, familiarity with hypnosis, and mental health history.
To meet eligibility requirements, the sole participant must be at least 18 years of age, fluent in English, and have (or maybe “express plan”) plans to pursue a clinical psychology career within a private practice setting.
Procedure
The current study is a semi-structured, one-on-one interview involving the researcher and a sole participant. The participant will be invited from the researcher’s cohort members via email, and it will be chosen based on a volunteer basis. An initial questionnaire will be provided to potential participants to assess eligibility, including age, spoken language, and future career goals. The first eligible volunteer will be chosen as the participant. Then the participant will be asked to complete a written consent form through email, including clauses and anonymity assurance.
After gathering the demographic information, the researcher and the participant will agree on a pre-scheduled interview date and time. The semi-structured one-on-one interview will be conducted in English via the zoom platform. The interview guide will consist of open-ended and non-directive questions to further explore what the participant thinks about hypnosis as an intervention for various mental health disorders. The participant will be informed prior to the interview that the entire conversation will be video and audio recorded as well as being transcribed verbatim.
Provisions of Trustworthiness
Data trustworthiness which includes credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability, will be established throughout the current study. Credibility will be warranted using multiple research methods (observation, interview), obtaining information from various sources, and making sure the sole participant answers the questions honestly. Transferability is how the researcher determines the findings of the study are applicable in other contexts. Since the current study is based on a sole participant (n=1), the researcher understands that the study results are not generalizable to other participants or populations, especially participants who are not members at Alliant Internation University, San Diego- first year PsyD program. Future research on at least a sample size of 10 must be conducted in order to generalize the result of the study. Dependability will be obtained by recording all the documents produced throughout the study and keeping a research journal including all the researcher’s personal thoughts. Confirmability is the degree of neutrality in the research study’s results, which was attained by recording all of the researcher’s biases that may affect the interpretations.
