EVALUATING AN AUTHOR’S CHOICES
Outline due: October 6, 2021 (upload to Canvas BEFORE CLASS)
Rough draft due: October 7, 2021 (upload to Canvas BEFORE CLASS–minimum 2.5 pgs)
Final draft due: October 20, 2021 (upload to Canvas by 8PM)
Length (final draft): 3-4 pages
Our texts in Unit 2 all focus on the impacts of pervasive technology on human beings. Both Nicholas Carr and Carole Cadwalladr consider the effects of Google, and while their articles focus on certain immediate aspects of Google technology—how Google offers us so many research sources, how it builds its certain engine results, etc.—both authors are also offering deeper arguments about the more profound ways that Google influences people. With this in mind, choose either Carr or Cadwalladr and write an essay which addresses the following questions:
According to your analysis, what specific power(s) is Carr/Cadwalladr suggesting that Google has over the people who use it? How does he/she attempt to convince you that Google has this power, and is he/she successful?
Be sure to maintain close contact with the question and the text, and use the text itself as the basis for your answer. Your essay should be well-argued and well-organized. Be sure to state a thesis and consistently support your ideas with solid evidence from the text.
As with paper one, you need to think about the choices he/she makes for how to present his/her ideas to readers. Remember: just because an author has a good idea, this doesn’t necessarily mean that he/she also does a good job of presenting that idea to readers. Your job is not just to identify the author’s idea (“they say”); you need to evaluate whether, as a writer, he makes thoughtful choices in convincing us of that idea (“I say”). Also remember that strong analysis will connect the specific writing choice to the specific argument that author is attempting to make.
Reminders:
Follow MLA format for all in-text citations.
Format your paper according to the MLA guidelines presented in your style manual.
Include a title that captures your argument.
Use proper file names and formats for submissions (see syllabus).
Make use of the Writing Center, and see me with any questions.
If you do not submit a full rough draft prior to the final draft deadline, the grade for your final draft will be lowered by one half letter.
