Chapter 17

Behavioral Statistics (PSYC 212-003)

Ent – Fall 2021

Name: __________________________ Date: _____________

1. A store owner wants to know if four types of milk (i.e., skim, 1%, 2%, and whole milk) are equally popular. Last week, she sold 31 gallons of skim milk, 23 gallons of 1% milk, 37 gallons of 2% milk, and 25 gallons of whole milk. Did the store sell an equal amount of the four types of milk, or were some types of milk significantly more popular than others? (Please show your work.) (5 points)

2. Use the JellyBeans.sav dataset. The dataset includes the color (i.e., green, pink, orange, purple, or black) of each jelly bean in a bag of N = 160 jelly beans. Suppose you want to know whether the candy company makes equal amounts of all five colors, or were some colors more common than others? Report the expected and observed frequencies of each color of jelly beans, the chi-square value, degrees of freedom, and the p-value in the manner we covered in class (APA style). (5 points)

3. Research on the pique technique (Santos et al., 1994) has found that people are more likely to comply with unusual requests—even if those requests are larger. In one study, for example, researchers asked 160 strangers to give them money. Sometimes, the researcher asked to borrow 25 cents; other times, they asked to borrow 37 cents.

Using the table below, what percentage of strangers agreed to loan the researcher 25 cents? What percentage of strangers agreed to loan them 37 cents? Using a two-way chi-square test, test whether people more likely to loan them 37 cents than they were to loan them 25 cents. Report the chi-square square value, degrees of freedom, and the p-value in the manner we covered in class (APA style). Please show your work. (5 points)

4. Use the OnlineDating.sav dataset. Test whether women were more likely than men to have tried online dating. Report the percentages of men and women who have tried online dating, the chi-square square value, degrees of freedom, and the p-value in the manner we covered in class (APA style). (5 points)
