HPE 420 Sport Analysis Project 1. Pick a sport/position that you want

HPE 420 Sport Analysis Project

1. Pick a sport/position that you want to coach. Include the age and sex of the athletic population.

Sex

2. Conduct a Needs Analysis for your athlete

A. Training Status: What would you like to know about your athletes on day one? Make a list of questions that you would ask of your athletes to determine training status, experience, etc.

B. Physiological Analysis

What are the physiological demands of that sport (muscle strength, power, endurance; see Ch 3)?

C. Movement Analysis

Pick 5 movements that are consistent with that sport. List at least 2 resistance exercises that will improve that movement (muscle strength, power, etc)

4. What performance testing would you use for tryouts and pre-season assessment?

Why did you pick these tests (how does this test apply to your sport [application])?

4. Training regimen

Go online. Research an off-season and an in-season training program, each lasting at least 8 weeks if not longer.

Evaluate each program for:

Step 1: Needs Analysis (completed above)

Step 2: Exercise Selection

Analyze the exercises for sport specific movement, are there exercises you would delete or add?

Why do you think that?

Step 3: Training Frequency

Is it appropriate for the season and population? Why or why not?

What would you do differently? Why?

Does the training frequency follow the principle of overload?

Does the training frequency follow periodization?

Step 4: Exercise Order

Will the order maximize benefits? Why or why not?

What would you do differently? Why?

Step 5: Training Load and Repetitions

Is it appropriate for the season and population? Why or why not?

What would you do differently? Why?

Does the repetition number follow the principle of overload?

Does the repetition follow periodization?

Step 6: Volume

Is it appropriate for the season and population? Why or why not?

What would you do differently? Why?

Does the volume follow the principle of overload?

Does the volume follow periodization?

Step 7: Rest Periods (is it appropriate for the season/outcome? Why or why not? What would you do differently? Why?

5. Research

Include recent research about that sport. Find two recent (no older that 5 years) research articles from peer reviewed journals that you can use to evaluate the performance tests or the training program. Write a report of the findings of these papers. Include a paragraph about the relevance of these papers to your analysis. You can include a third paper for extra credit.

6. Other Considerations

What are considerations for training other populations?

other sex, ages, etc?

would you change anything?

Logistics:

There are no set page numbers because the training program will vary greatly. Be as thorough as possible. I will be grading on quality, not quantity.

Font: Calibri, 12

Margins: “Moderate” in MS Word

Use a header with your sport and last name on each page and the page number

Example– Women’s Basketball, Chandler 1
