Social Foundations of Urban Education

Philosophy of Education

DUE: December 16th by 11:59 PM

For this assignment, you will write your philosophy of education. It should be between 8-12 pages in length. You might consider this as “a promise” as to what you plan to deliver as an urban educator. Your intended audience, in addition to me as your instructor, includes your future principal (if writing from the perspective of a traditional classroom teacher), students, parents/guardians, and the community. This will require that your writing be informed by the scholarly works we have read and discussed, and yet be communicated in your paper using clear, concise, and effective language.

Your readings, class discussions, films, podcasts, group presentations (both yours and classmates), and field hours can and should inform your writing here. This paper should serve as a guide to helping you solidify your understanding of your role as an urban educator, and this assignment serves as a written deliverable that incorporates the major ideas and concepts that have influenced you thus far in the semester.

Your paper should be formatted under APA guidelines and include in-text citations and a reference page. Your papers should follow the following format:

INTRODUCTION (~1 page)

In the introduction to the paper, you will introduce your purpose of schooling/function of education, using evidence from your course materials. Your thesis should clearly state what you think the purpose/function of education should be and what guides your general philosophy.

Consider the following questions:

What does being an educator look like for you? What do you teach? (If you are not interested in being a teacher, maybe a community organizer or some role where you are in leadership and educating others).

What is your motivation for becoming an educator?

What are some principles that will guide your work?

How have your personal and professional experiences influenced your desire to become an educator?

How have the historic and philosophical perspectives we’ve covered in class influenced your understanding of what it means to be an educator?

What political and intellectual influences that we’ve discussed in class inform your understanding of the role of schools in society?

BODY OF THE PAPER (~4-6 pages)

In the body of the paper, you will explore the ways the readings have influenced your understanding of schools and schooling and your role as an educator.

Consider the following questions:

With regard to the role of schools in society:

What public goals are appropriate for public schools? Economic goals? Intellectual goals? Political goals?

What scholarly works and readings inform your position on these public goals of education?

What kind of society will you teach toward? How do your chosen principles support your work? Which authors inform and support your position? How do they compare & contrast with your perspective?

If you are NOT writing from the perspective of a traditional classroom teacher, be sure to describe what the education you’re providing looks like and why it’s important for society.

With regard to your classroom:

What will your students know and be able to do? Be sure to describe who you think/hope your students will be. (i.e. A high school biology class, special needs, etc.)

What role will race, ethnicity, gender, social class, language, and other socio-demographic factors play in your classroom? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding here? What authors inform and support your position?

What are the roles of the students in the educational process? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding here? What authors inform and support your position?

What approach will you take toward curriculum? How will you approach mandated curriculum?

What pedagogical practices might you employ? Why?

If you are NOT writing from the perspective of a traditional If you are NOT writing from the perspective of a traditional classroom teacher, describe the community you will be educating. Why is it important to provide the education you will to this community? What role does identity play? Also respond to the questions above about what they’ll know, the role or identity, your approach toward curriculum, etc.

With regard to the community:

What role will parents/guardians play in the educational process? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding here? What authors inform and support your position?

What role will your educational colleagues play in the educational process? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding here? What authors inform and support your position?

How does the local community influence the educational process? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding here? What authors inform and support your position?

With regard to your role as an educator:

What are the major roles of an educator? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding here? What authors inform and support your position?

Based on your philosophy, what challenges do you anticipate having and how will you deal with them?

How will you ensure that you show up when it gets rough? What supports and self-care will you put in place for yourself? Why is this important?

CONCLUSION (~1 page)

Finally, in the conclusion, you will summarize your philosophy of education and provide your own analysis of your role as an educator. By your own analysis, I mean you will reiterate evidence as it relates to the development of your own philosophy of education and draw connections between this evidence and your personal and professional experience in the classroom.

Consider the following questions:

What do you believe the major function of education in society should be? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding of this function?

What role will you play as an educator in contributing to this function of education? How do theory, history, and politics influence your understanding of yourself as an educator and leader in the classroom?
