ENG 102
Always Cherish Love
As I sat down and analyzed these two pieces I realized that they were different but very similar in some ways. When I began reading “That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold” I realized that it was explaining how love is stronger between two lovers’ when death is near. When I took my time and listened to “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” it was explaining that she would love him with no regret because once they’re gone you won’t get to do it again.
The first four lines in the poem “That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold” is Shakespeare’s way of saying that he is indeed of age and he knows that his time is near. To me when he says, “When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang…” he is talking about himself and how being of old age can make you feel empty and hollow inside. The next four lines he compares this process to twilight. When Shakespeare states “As after sunset fadeth in the west” and “Which by and by black night doth take away” I believe that he said that because of how terrified he is because he knows his youthfulness has gradually slipped before his eyes and he can not stop what’s next, which is death. The next four lines Shakepeare compares himself to ashes. “In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire/ That on the ashes of his youth doth lie ”, again tells his readers that he is troubled with the thought of aging. Lastly in the last two lines Shakespeare realizes how deep his love for his lover has become despite his old age and knowing that death is near it is important to love each other more than ever before.
In the song “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” by Meghan Trainor and John Legend the artists express themselves that even though they know their partner’s love won’t last they are cherishing the last moments that they share. Although the song is very easy to interpret it’s hard to break it down because it’s easy to see that they wanted the listeners to know to never take love for granted. In the first eight measures “I found myself dreaming/ In silver and gold/ Like a scene from a movie/ That every broken heart knows/ We were walking on moonlight/ And you pulled me close/ Split second and you disappeared/ And then I was all alone”, to me it meant that everything felt magical that she put herself in a daze then it felt too good to be true and that when something tragic happened and she suddenly snapped out of it and realized she was all on her own. However, the next five lines “ I woke up in tears/ With you by my side/ A breath of relief/ And I realized/ .No, we’re not promised tomorrow” shows that it was a dream but when she realized it wasn’t real that took a weight off of her shoulders. To me, the chorus of the song means that if he/she loves their partner hard when they leave it will be hard but it won’t be as hard because they’ll have no regrets. John Legend’s part in the song was saying the same thing that Meghan was saying that he will not love with regrets because tomorrow isn’t promised.
In conclusion, this poem and song have so much in common because they both tell you to cherish and love hard while your lover is here because once they’re gone you won’t get that opportunity again. Whether they’re old or young you will realize that you love them harder when they’re gone because now all you have are those moments to cherish. However they are different because the tone of the poem was kind of depressing and the song was sad but soulful.
