Question: In your estimation, how does the media contribute to a “policing mythology” (a distortion of the actualities of police and police work)? What, if any, are the real world consequences of these distorted characterizations? Police Powers and Accountability: “Policing inherently involves intervening in conflicts, so good service to some means bad outcomes for others.”
Question: Much of police work is characterized by ‘low visibility’ and the related discretion police have at their disposable while carrying out police-work. While both ‘low visibility’ and discretionary powers are an inevitable part of policing, they are also a source of many of the problems that plague modern policing. Policing, at times, can be seen as ‘antithetical to democracy’ if by democracy we mean participation, consent, transparency and accountability in the use of public power.
